susanhemmings Posted 13 November , 2008 Share Posted 13 November , 2008 Here you are and welcome to the forum. Don't ever worry about asking questions - there are many people on here with a wealth of knowledge that they will happily share with you (unfortunately I do not have that much knowledge but am always willing to help where I can). Someone other than myself will be able to answer the two number question. Susan.
jay dubaya Posted 14 November , 2008 Share Posted 14 November , 2008 His 6 digit TF number puts him with the 1/7th Bn or 2/7th Bn. A check of the medal rolls or one of the forum Notts & Derby experts may be able to confirm which unit. Jon
Stebie9173 Posted 14 November , 2008 Share Posted 14 November , 2008 If you edit the first post on this topic to included "Sherwood Foresters" or "Notts & Derby" then the regimental experts should pay your topic a visit.... The 6-digit number relates to a re-numbering exercise in 1917. All Territorial Force men were given a new number, in the same sequential order as their old ones, within a range of numbers dependent on which battalion they were in. This was an administrative exercise and did not cause men to change battalions. Steve.
agedpink Posted 14 November , 2008 Author Share Posted 14 November , 2008 Thanks everyone for the information and for being patient with a beginner! The George Sherwin was my wifes Grandfather who died in the 1960's He never spoke about the war but suffered for the rest of his life due to being gassed
