Very very impressive, well done all. ;)

It's a great pity that the information you detail above can't be included on their entry. (reason for death/ Place of death) :(

I'll be at the Shropshire archives in Shrewsbury soon, Solely to check the Shrewsbury cemetery burial register, i'll be sure to check to see if he's buried there.

Any more info on him? Has he been found via SDGW ?

Chris - Perhaps one for you Chris, I'd be interested since it may be a distant rellie, (via marriage)

Pte Arthur Horton, born Manchester, enlisted Ashton-u-Lyne.

There is a burial record, Manchester General Cemetery 5 days after his date of death. Grave 5281.

Looks like the parents are buried there also (John and Priscilla) - also found these 3 on 1901 census.

Terry- any indication of parents name on DC - present at death perhaps?

Could be our chap.

geoff

edit: guess not present, see he died in prison?

Geoff/Neil

No parental info but he lived at 475 Rochdale Rd, Manchester and was formerly a clogmaker

I will get CWGC to check the grave.

Terry,

Father, on 1901 census, John Horton was a clog maker also. Could be our man in that grave.

The only Thomas Griffin listed in the Manchester City Battalions Book of Honour was a police officer. I will contact Greater Manchester Police's archives & museum to see if they are able to help.

Police Museum tell me they'll set their archivist to work - be back to us in a week or so.

In "Police speak" that means 1 year or so

Seriously, nice work.

I reckon a lot of home deaths made it home for burial.

Born West Dean, Gloucester, enlisted Lydney, Gloucester. There is a Lydney memorial list on line but I could not find him there. Nothing found on line for West Dean, perhaps you will have more luck than I did. Nothing certain found for 1901 also.

Had another look on Ancestry 1901 - pig of a search engine.

Found two Sidney Kear 1901 entries at the NA (don't have account for this). Both age 6, birth 'Glos West Dean' and West Dean Glos Shire' respectively. CP is West Dean. Cannot get these out of Ancestry. Good old A.

This might be worth a go:

Some Gloucestershire war memorial transcripts here, might be useful for others.

http://www.glosgen.co.uk/parish.htm

Nothing on Lydney list. No list for West Dean or Coleford

Isn't there a "burial index" project out there somewhere? FindMyPast?

And, at the risk of telling Chris how to suck eggs, surely an approach to the relevent local history library in the areas where they died and where they lived might secure a look-up in the local newspapers for a burial (often with "military honours")

geoff's post re two Sidney Kears, West Dean:

1) Marsh Lane

Son of Albert

2)Mill Hill Bream

son of Richard

Every other family in the area on Census are Kear!

John

the next place to look for Kear is Lydney in the Forest Of Dean - the local cemetery is under the control of the CofE - now Sidney was a sucide - now Im going to be frank here - in every other case I have dealt with regarding churchyards/ Church cemeteries I have suffered from a lack of cooperation of the local clergy; which means my e mails/letters remain unanswered. I can name countless councils who give an answer with days; sometimes hours (god bless you Dover). Bringing us back to suicides these poor souls deaths were shunned at the time as they were a crime against the law of the land & against god.

I dont forget any sources, but at times you are not going to get any answers

Raising a belated glass to the memories of Bernard, Thomas, Arthur, Sidney, Henry & Alfred. Also another to Harters, Peter & Kev for their hard work.

The only national burial Index I'm aware of is the National Burial Index Ver 2. I have it on disk but it's never worked for me. Perhaps someone has a copy that works? Some counties get good cover whereas others get scant coverage.

John,Peter,Kevin - WELL DONE! :D
