bailleulcem Posted 12 November , 2008 Share Posted 12 November , 2008 any look-up welcome I am trying to find the service records for my Grand Uncle and would be grateful for any information you may be able to find that would confirm the battles he fought in and the injury's he suffered leading up to his death. Edward Purcell, number 8939, Royal Irish Regiment for 10 years, 1st Battallion, Acting Lance corporal, died of wounds 27th March 1915. Next of kin are parents Ellen and Robert. Buried in Bailleul cemetary, Nord. The above basic details are at the cwgc but I cannot find his actual service records and wonder if any exist. His medal record card using his correct service number is incorrectly noted with the christian name of William. He only had one name and this was Edward. Do you know why the medal card would have been filled in with the wrong christian name? Many thanks in advance.

Esskay Posted 13 November , 2008 Share Posted 13 November , 2008 Folks - what Jock has offered look ups in is a publication known as Soldiers Died in the Great War (also available on CD and pay per view through Find My Past) - it sometimes fills in a few extra details about men in the Army/RFC that people may not have - it has been shown though to not be 100% accurate at all times. Robert Dunlop Posted 13 November , 2008 Share Posted 13 November , 2008 jocktamson, I have a different kind of request, if I may. While reading a semi-autobiographical account of a German soldier, I came across a detailed description of the burial of a Scots officer. The event can be dated to February 1916. The officer was a member of a kilted Scots regiment. He died as a prisoner of war in a camp near the town of Oldenburg. Is it possible to use SDGW to obtain a list of officers who died during a month, by regiment? Do SDGW entries indentify men who died as PoWs? Could this information be used to filter the list? Thanks Robert

Robert Dunlop Posted 13 November , 2008 Share Posted 13 November , 2008 Many thanks. I don't have a surname. This is one of those detective mystery type problems. I know the approximate location and date of death, but not the precise individual. Would it be easiest for you to email the list? I will PM you with the address. Again, many thanks. If it is possible to narrow down who the person might have been, then it could be helpful to some family member to read a description of what happened at the funeral. Robert Dunlop Posted 13 November , 2008 Share Posted 13 November , 2008 From Joe's post in this thread, and assuming the officer in question was in one of the Regular regiments, then the regiment would be one of the following: Royal Highlanders (Black Watch) Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Seaforth Highlanders Gordon Highlanders Cameron Highlanders I can only narrow the date to February, 1916 - sorry. Robert
Robert Dunlop Posted 13 November , 2008 Share Posted 13 November , 2008 I had wondered if SDGW would produce a file output, like an Excel list of the potential candidates. Do you have to search each potential individual in turn? If so, then please don't waste your time doing something so laborious. I quite understand that this would be too onerous.
