jh2leicester Posted 11 November , 2008 Share Posted 11 November , 2008 I have done quite a bit of research about my great granfather who was a CSM in the 1st Bn Leicestershire Rgt from 1915 until wounded in 1916. I know quite a bit about his service in the Somme area and know that the Bn was based in the Ypres salient in 1915. Havind seen copies of the Bn war diary, I understand that they spent time near 'Witjes farm' unfortunately, this seems to be a perfect example of British corruption of a Belgian place name. Does anyone have any idea where abouts near Ypres this may be?
AlanCurragh Posted 11 November , 2008 Share Posted 11 November , 2008 JH - the place referred to is Wieltje - if you do a search on the forum, you'll find many references. There is also a Wieltje Farm Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery, NE of Ypres Alan
