JohnNR Posted 8 November , 2008 Share Posted 8 November , 2008 November 8th is the anniversary of the Charge of the Worcestershire and Warwickshire Yeomanry Cavalry at Huj. The 60th Division was having trouble with rifle and machine gun fire from the ridge immediately ahead of them and from a mountain gun battery on their right flank, some manned by Austrian gunners. A mounted attack was considered the best solution and the Colonel commanding the Yeomanry cavalry rode off to request support from the 3rd ALH Brigade. While he was away, Gen Shea, commanding the 60th, rode up to order an immediate attack. This consisted of two separate charges; the first by the Worcesters to clear infantry, who threatened to enfillade the main attack from a ridge; the second by the Warwicks, joined by the Worcesters, against the mountain guns and machine guns. Out of 160 cavalrymen, about 40 were killed and 70 wounded, with around 65 horses killed or missing. Approximately 80 Turks and Austrians died by the sword - like an event from a bygone age. If not, I can post them for you......Hussar! For those wishing to learn more about 'The Affair of Huj' 8th November 1917 then see http://www.armymuseums.org.uk/museums/0000...anry-Museum.htm We have on display one of the original 75mm guns captured by the WY, subsequently recovered from New Zealand and refurbished by the Royal School of Artillery at Larkhill in 2001. Martin Bennitt Posted 29 November , 2009 Share Posted 29 November , 2009 A friend of mine, journalist turned historian Colin Smith, wrote a novel about the charge, 'The Last Crusade', now out of print but no doubt obtainable if you look hard enough, which I consider one of the better examples of Great War fiction. cheers Martin B

Guest Posted 9 November , 2017 Share Posted 9 November , 2017 Mate, I gave these AIF losses around that area on the same date on the ALH Assoc webb site; Today as the Ottoman 8th Army began to retreat British units followed up. The LH with the 3rd LH Bde and 2nd LH Bde's in front, tried to catch the rear guards, which they did a number of times, the British Yeomanry had a great victory when they charged these forces around Huj. At the same time the Ottoman 7th Army, as they retired attacked the Camel Bde along the Hebron road to cover that withdrawal. Philip Wilson Posted 9 November , 2017 Share Posted 9 November , 2017 (edited) The Warwickshire Yeomanry Museum held a Reception in the Ballroom of The Court House, Warwick last night with invited Guests as part of 'HUJ100 - A Centenary Remembered.' Our guests included relatives of those Yeoman who participated in 'The Affair at HUJ' - 8th November 1917 which is generally considered to be the last classic unsupported cavalry charge of the British Army involving 1.5 Squadron's Warwickshire Yeomanry and 1.5 Squadrons of the Queen's Own Worcestershire Hussars. A special booklet was produced for the event which provides a brief overview of the action. When time permits I will include the brief overview in the Great War Forum. The Warwickshire Yeomanry Museum will be open on 11 November 2017 from 10am until 4pm to enable the public to view the Museum and in particular one of field guns which was captured one hundred years ago on 8 November 1917. Thereafter we are closed until Good Friday 2018. The Museum welcomes private viewings and group visits throughout the year- see our website for booking form.
