paul guthrie Posted 7 November , 2008 Share Posted 7 November , 2008 There is a review of Borrowed Soldiers in the new Stand To! It's about the US 27th & 30 Divisions which trained with and fought with British - mostly Australian - through their entire service. It says that the unidentified men are memorialized on Menin Gate. Sounds pretty strange to me since all US cemeteries have a chapel with the names of those on the walls. Let me know, I've been to Menin Gate many times and always assumed there were US names there since many served with Canadian and other empire armies but as members of those armies/regiments. Cliff. Hobson Posted 7 November , 2008 Share Posted 7 November , 2008 Paul, My regards, I expect Jackie Platteau will have the answer to that. Cliff.
Paul Reed Posted 7 November , 2008 Share Posted 7 November , 2008 Paul, there are no AEF names on the Menin Gate; all AEF missing for Belgium are on the walls of the chapel in the In Flanders Fields Cemetery.
ypresman Posted 7 November , 2008 Share Posted 7 November , 2008 In the American 'In Flanders Fields Cemetery' ....upon the side walls of the Chapel panels, carry the names of 43 American soldiers who lost their lives in Belgium ONLY.... and sleep in unknown graves. None on the Menin Gate.
hillgorilla Posted 10 November , 2008 Share Posted 10 November , 2008 Whilst there are no AEF men on the Menin Gate, I wonder how many of those named did come from America?
Guest geoff501 Posted 10 November , 2008 Share Posted 10 November , 2008 Whilst there are no AEF men on the Menin Gate, I wonder how many of those named did come from America? I found at least 177 with a USA connection (birth, emigration, marriage), on the Menin Gate. However you can't do that easily with my on-line search engine - it gives results for all memorials (almost 1000). Around 40% have no info, so could be more that this. Let me know if you are Really interested in details - or ask CWGC !
14kvn Posted 10 November , 2008 Share Posted 10 November , 2008 Can I remind you of the inscription on the Menin Gate " TO THE ARMIES OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE WHO STOOD HERE FROM 1914 TO 1918 AND TO THOSE OF THEIR DEAD WHO HAVE NO KNOWN GRAVE" To my knowledge America was not part of the British Empire at that time ! Guest geoff501 Posted 10 November , 2008 Share Posted 10 November , 2008 I found at least 177... Most, but not all, Canadian Infantry. So probably many were from the USA.
