brodie Posted 7 November , 2008 Share Posted 7 November , 2008 We have a German sword which our son picked up in a junk shop years ago. Looking online and in books, we reckon it's a Prussian Infantry Officer's sword from circa 1900 or just after. The guard has the German Imperial lion and Wilhelm 11 cypher - the cypher is repeated on the snakeskin hand grip. The scabbard has "35 R R" embossed at the top - there is a small crown between the two Rs and a small 2 following the second R. We were wondering if this indicates the Regiment with which the original owner served. Does anyone know if that is right and if so, which Regiment it refers to? The Prussian Posted 8 November , 2008 Share Posted 8 November , 2008 Hi Brodie! Do you mean: 35 R*R.2? The star stands for the crown... Is the first R ornate? In that case it´s the 2.companie of the 35.reserve infantry regiment By the way: Hi Daniel. How are you?
brodie Posted 8 November , 2008 Author Share Posted 8 November , 2008 Sorry guys. First of all, we are now almost certain that the 3 is actually a worn 6. I've tried every which way to photograph the markings but can't get it clear enough to read. But I've done a drawing of the marks and photographed that. I've also attached a couple photos of the sword itself with the scabbard alongside and you can see part of the marks on them if you blow them up. The two Rs are identical and are not ornate. Cnock Posted 8 November , 2008 Share Posted 8 November , 2008 Hi, as the scabbard has regimental numbering on it, it was issued to a NCO. Officers had to purchase privately their sword. Regards, Cnock
The Prussian Posted 9 November , 2008 Share Posted 9 November , 2008 Hi Brodie! Well, normally we´ve got the 2nd company, 65.reserve infantry regiment. Another possibility is the "Rekrutendepot" of the infantry regiment 65. The "R.R." stands for "Rekrutendepot of the infantry-regiment". A "R.R." stands for reserve infantry regiment. (Note the ornate "R")
