Mametz Wood

It strikes me that I have yet to see a 1916 photograph of the aftermath of this battle. Ariel trench shots - yes, but nothing that records the survivers or the dead. I have inquired at RWF Archives - nothing. Most other battles seem to have a limited selection of photos recording various scenes, but Mametz seems to be a blank. Given the scale of troop movement in the area during the three days following the battle it seems odd that there are no photographic records. Could a Pal correct me or inform me otherwise? Appreciated in advance.

Hello,

Take a look at the book by Bernard Lewis(Swansea Pals) Chapter 7 The Assault On Mametz Wood. Pages 95,112,114 and 128.

Hope this has been some help to you and they are the kind of photographs that you are interested in.

Regards Mark

Thanks for the plug, Mark.

The wood snaps in my book are courteousy of the Imperial War Museum and the Taylor Library - from memory the IWM have a bigger collection of them including some I didn't use.

Pen & Sword Books (my publisher) own the Taylor Library - a huge collection. Not sure if anyone can access those.

In any event if you contact these you'll need to pay a fee.

Nice to see you are back, where have you been? Did you manage the group photo of the N.Wales meet, love to see it.
