Mick D Posted 6 November , 2008 Share Posted 6 November , 2008 Hello all, Can anyone supply any information on this man. He was wounded at least once during WW1, and possibly became an instructor with the Royal Flying Cops before the end of the war. I have his MIC, London Gazette re promotion to Captain. I'm hoping someone has war diaries for the unit or any other records on him ! Mick
sotonmate Posted 6 November , 2008 Share Posted 6 November , 2008 Mick You have 9 to choose from in Officer Service Files WO339 at Kew. Seven of them are straight WELCH J ,one is JEH and the last one is JGL. Sotonmate
pam_vowles Posted 6 November , 2008 Share Posted 6 November , 2008 Hi Mick I have the was diary and all the associated appendices, I have started to do a data base (don't ask what my computer did to it!!!) anyway from the bits in the diary etc, I have not come across his name so far. Do you know roughly when he was wounded or any other info and I can have a closer look. Pam

sotonmate Posted 6 November , 2008 Share Posted 6 November , 2008 Mick It's an eyeball job I'm afraid. They are just paper files at the moment. You could order copies if you knew which one you want. If you send me a PM by the 16th Nov, if you don't have it by then, and I will see if I can find it on my next visit. Sotonmate
pam_vowles Posted 6 November , 2008 Share Posted 6 November , 2008 Hi Mick Just had a bit of a eureka moment, I've at long last found him mentioned in the assd papers:- Hospital moves in area 2/11/918 to hosp Captain Welch J. he's out on 23/11/1918. Again 20/3/1919 he's in hosp and out on 25/3/1919. It doesn't say what the hospital stays were for. Please tell me there is only one Capt J Welch!!! and this is him. Mick D Posted 6 November , 2008 Author Share Posted 6 November , 2008 You 2 are absolute stars ! Sotonmate - can I look at them online ? if not then I'm afraid I cannot attend the PRO. What inf is likely to be on them anyway ? Pam - fantastic result, what papers are you looking at ? Does it give the nature of the reason for hospitalisation ? pam_vowles Posted 6 November , 2008 Share Posted 6 November , 2008 Sorry Mick, it doesn't say, these are on the lists that were with the war diary, "Hospital Moves in Area" and just gives name, rank, number, date in hosp. Then you look for the next list and see date they return to battalion. No other info was given. There are also lists showing courses men were sent on but couldn't see his name on any of them. Mick D Posted 6 November , 2008 Author Share Posted 6 November , 2008 Pam, That information is great, the chap who has asked me is Capt Welch's son, I know he is aware of the nature of the injuries because his dad told him, but I bet he doesn't know the exact dates. This inf will be passed onto him. Mick

Mick D Posted 25 November , 2008 Author Share Posted 25 November , 2008 Received some fantastic documents & photographs relating to this man. His Army Book 439 shows that after he was wounded for the second time he was posted to the RFC. But again the dreaded handwriting is causing a problem, any ideas what the following scan says under 1/ Assistant Instructor, 2/ Squadron Commander. Any replies are welcome.
