OpsMajor Posted 6 November , 2008 Share Posted 6 November , 2008 Whilst on holiday in Cornwall I met a venerable old chap who told me about "Lucky Villages" - a term I had not heard before. He said that although practically every village and hamlet in the country had chaps who went to WW1 a few had all their men returned and they erected 'thankful memorials'. He quoted Herodsfoot (nr Looe?) as one which had about 10 returnees but no KiAs. Is this an urban myth? Mike
AlanCurragh Posted 6 November , 2008 Share Posted 6 November , 2008 Mike - not sure about "thankful memorials" but this thread discusses Thankful Villages. If you do a search for "thankful villages", you'll find more threads Alan http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/i...nkful++villages
spoons Posted 6 November , 2008 Share Posted 6 November , 2008 Certainly the term 'thankful villages' is fairly well known. See this link on Wikipedia But note that there are no thankful villages in Scotland No mention of your village either \Spoons
