cranagem Posted 6 November , 2008 Share Posted 6 November , 2008 I am trying to find out if my great grand father was based in Canterbury around 1902. On the 1901 UK Census Oxford, Arthur Bryant is based at Oxford military barracks in the private infantry. At some time early 1900s he would have travelled to Kent. Does anyone know what units were based at either Cavalry, Artillery or Infantry Barracks around 1902 and would my great grand fathers unit based from Oxford post to canterbury kent
Neil Mackenzie Posted 6 November , 2008 Share Posted 6 November , 2008 Mark. Welcome to the Forum. The 6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers) were at Canterbury after returning from South Africa in 1913. I believe they had gone out in 1908 so may have been in Canterbury in the timescale you are looking at. Good luck. Neil

cranagem Posted 6 November , 2008 Author Share Posted 6 November , 2008 Mark Do you know what unit your great-grandfather was serving in? Dave Dave. No I dont know what unit he served in, I have not much information at all. I am trying to establish whether Arthur is my great grand father as he married my great grand mother in 1917, but I have found he he fatherd children with Martha my great grand mother early 1900s. I know my great grand mother lived in Notly Street and Clyde street in 1900 and 1901, this is where I think the man she was married to left as Martha had met Arthur Bryant. It seems ironic that Arthur Bryant served in army and trained in Oxford and t ome he must have travelled close to where Martha was living, I wish i could find the unit he served in... Neil Clark Posted 7 November , 2008 Share Posted 7 November , 2008 I hope this link helps you - http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/i...avalry+barracks If you want further information on the Buffs Depot in Canterbury (Howe Barracks) then let me know. It still exists and is used by the 5th Battalion, R.Regt of Scotland. The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment also have their Depot there (forerunner of the Buffs).
