Carlsberg Tetley have Today announced that they will be closing Down their Brewery in Leeds in around 3 Years Time. There is a War Memorial inside the Brewery that list every Man from the Brewery who was KIA,and His Regiment.I wonder if Messrs Carlsberg Tetley have thought about what will happen to the War memorial if the Building is sold to Developers ?...do they have a Lawful Duty to protect the Memorial ?,and to ensure its Safety ?.

...do they have a Lawful Duty to protect the Memorial ?

Wouldnt have thought so, unless it forms any part of a "listed building " status that the brewery may have.

Folk to warn would be those at the National Inventory so they could start early discussions with the current and possible future owners.

Russell,

Serious stuff if there is the chance of a war memorial being lost. War Memorials Trust http://www.warmemorials.org/ would like to know, if you are sure that there is a threat to the memorial. Do you have any details of the names thereon?

With best wishes,

David

Will try to get my wife to get pics if possible as she works at Carlsberg UK (formally Tetley's). although the mood as you might imagine is not good at the moment. Will try though, would try get in myself but security is as tight as a ducks you know what and even relatives not allowed on site. I beleive building may be listed as it dates to 1800's but on council plans seen few years ago when the building of apartments/offices started they show it as a park site and there's no sign of the building in the future

Hi there guys,

Just to let you know that I wrote to Carlesberg and they have answered saying that if the brewery closes then the Heritage of Tetleys and that includes the War Memorial will be taken into account, and thats as of today, so we are on the ball.

I also started this topic off in the Skindles Club and have posted the same answer there.

Cheers Roger.

Nice Move Roger..it makes sense,as some Members never venture out from Skindles, and some of us never venture in. :D ..The more members that know about the Original Topic the better.

I have an old book - A century of Progress produced by Tetley's in 1923 to celebrate their centenary. It lists the Joshua Tetley employee's who served their country. Theres only a brief summary, but covers name, initial, Tetley's department worked in, enlistment date, rank, regiment and remarks (wounded, awards, etc).

If anybody wants a check, let me know.

Spud

As you'd expect Tetley's must have been a large employer in its day. Based on a quick count, the book lists 25 men killed (12 with the West Yorks Regt.). In addition a further approx 250 employees are shown as having served their country, including three actual Tetley's.

A brewery with a proud heritage, but sadly an uncertain future.
