herewith a very surprising item: surprising, that is, for being on the uniform where it was seen.

What do we think it is?

More after I get some input!

How about training warrant officer in a Light Infantry regiment.

from context, I am pretty sure that I know what it is, and when, and will post a couple of photos after more input.

I believe it to be none of the above.

It really was a big surprise.

Swordsmanship while playing a bugle?

But seriously, Skill at Arms Light Infantry or Rifles? Volunteers or TF perhaps?

I can`t help with the poser. I trust you won`t mind me slipping this one in as an example of a quasi-military badge, just to avoid some member trying to name it. It is apparently the Corps of Commissionaires, though it had me stumped!

Trade badge for someone who can "Pop" a Champagne cork with a Sabre, whilst playing a Bugle?

I was pondering RMLI; given Phil's detective work, is it possible?

Incidentally, is that a "3" at the top of the shoulder title? If so, it's (I presume) a predecessor of the Cambridgeshire Regiment; probably some form of punting badge, then.
