London Gazette Lookup

Hello all

I was wondering if some kind person would see if they could find the Gazette entry for the above for me. In a letter received by Fulwood Barracks dated 6/4/1919, he is making a 2nd application for his Military Medal.

He states, "I won my medal, as a Private, in a Bomb Raid on Pachendael Ridge on February 18th, 1918. (?) gazetted March 12th 1918." (He apparently received his medal on 30/4/1919).

He was also in the Army Ordnance Corps (013618)

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Mabel

Gosh - speedy Stuart.

Many thanks - much appreciated. (Would there have been a citation giving details of his award do you know?)

Good heavens - just realised that I'm now an 'Old Sweat" !!!

Sorry Mabel, citations for Military Medals are extremely difficult to find - very, very few were ever published in the London Gazette. The best chance is some sort of description in a local newspaper.

Cheers,

Stuart

Again, many thanks Stuart - that's what I was afraid of. Perhaps, as well as local newspapers, I ought to see if the War Diary has anything.

Yes, in the case of a smaller action such as a trench raid, the war diary may have something extra - perhaps a report of the raid. I would also recommend moving up the formations and searching the Brigade and Divisional diaries. Quite often these are the places where the filed reports are to be found. Often at the end of a report, names are mentioned as to having been brought to the attention of the commanding officer.

Military Medal citations are few and far between - or at least information about them seems cast to the Four Winds. There is no longer one central archive for researching them, though some units - Tank Corps being one - do have more surviving records than others.

Local papers, Regimental Histories and War Diaries may provide details or clues, though some MM details may never be found :(

Steve.

P.S. Welcome to the Madhouse known as Skindles. Sven the barman is marking up a (virtual) slate for you.

Stuart and Steve: Thanks for the tips - he was a Liverpudlian so will have to see what newspapers it might have been reported in - looks like I've fair bit of digging to do!

(Steve: Thanks too for the welcome. I'm looking forward to meeting Sven!)
