Guest mark taylor Posted 7 March , 2004 Share Posted 7 March , 2004 I've just bought a copy of Denis Winter's "Death's Men" and have not put it down sincebook, I got it! I think this book, written in 1978, provides an excellent account of what the war meant to those who faced death on a daily basis and still managed to think of sport, their stomachs and other.....pastimes. A great book. Has anyone else read this and if so are there others out there that are as good? Mark
museumtom Posted 7 March , 2004 Share Posted 7 March , 2004 It is without a doubt (in my humble opinion) the best book I have ever read on ww1. I read it so much it fell apart and now I am looking for another. Tom.
Edward_N_Kelly Posted 8 March , 2004 Share Posted 8 March , 2004 As distinct from his book on Haig ? I wonder how he is viewed as an historian now. Some think that Denis Winter suffered almost irreparable damage when this book (and its claims) was subjected to a more rigorous examination. paul guthrie Posted 8 March , 2004 Share Posted 8 March , 2004 Death's Men is a fine book on the life of the ordinary soldier. How the same man could have written a calumny like Haig's Command is beyond me. Admire Haig or not, it's character assasination, w/o evidence calls him a homosexual, civil & military crime & much more.

Guest mark taylor Posted 8 March , 2004 Share Posted 8 March , 2004 Some interesting points raised. I've not read the character assassination of Haig but will certainly try to read it at some stage. Any idea when the Richard Holmes' book is due to be released? Thanks for the responses so far! Mark
