MartH Posted 4 November , 2008 Share Posted 4 November , 2008 For anyone who missed this programme last night by Professor David Reynolds on the Armistice last night, now out on iplayer - it is well worth a watch, especially after the Micheal Palin programme. This one covered the German and French sides in my opinion very well. It is on iplayer till next Monday 10th. It also gave a different fate to the coach, which maybe should be a debate on another thread. (GAC did you see it? It had footage of the coach on the German transporter leaving). He also went to the site of the German GW national memorial. I plan to watch both again on iplayer via my PS3 on TV, a really fine setup. Any thoughts? Apologies to the mods if a thread is already up and running on this programme, I did search.
MartinWills Posted 4 November , 2008 Share Posted 4 November , 2008 The coach perished in what became East Germany, though locals salvaged a few relics some of which found their way back to Compiegne in recent years. The coach at Compiegne today is a very similar coach of the same era and bears the running number for the original coach. It is not the original coach. stuartd Posted 4 November , 2008 Share Posted 4 November , 2008 I really enjoyed this programme and it is well worth a watch! It was very refreshing to see a programme which dealt with the wider (European) perspective of the war from the German point of view and not just focusing on the usual Haig / Britain on the Western Front. Excellent and interesting.
unitedsound Posted 4 November , 2008 Share Posted 4 November , 2008 I missed this, thanks for the IPLAYER tip. David
JimSmithson Posted 4 November , 2008 Share Posted 4 November , 2008 I would also highly recommend the programme. Prof Reynolds is one of that rare breed of academic who is willing to be very animated and even theatrical on screen. Some others of his colleagues would possibly look on in distaste as he mimics the Kaiser shouting at his aids but I think it makes for interesting television history. Armistice puts a political context to much of the 'Last Day' programme and will, I am certain, be of interest to all on this Forum. Jim
DavidMillichope Posted 5 November , 2008 Share Posted 5 November , 2008 Enthralling. The production values and David Reynolds "performance" were very acceptable to me. Good to see a German perspective and Ludendorff's role in particular.
JimSmithson Posted 5 November , 2008 Share Posted 5 November , 2008 Interesting to see how many posts the other Remembrance programmes have compared to this one. Did so few see it or are we less inclined to have heated discussions when an eminent academic presents a programme? Jim
David Seymour Posted 5 November , 2008 Share Posted 5 November , 2008 Jim, The programme also has a thread here: http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/i...howtopic=109424 Must have been a good programme, however, as the discussion there amounts to only twenty-one posts!!! With best wishes, David
JimSmithson Posted 5 November , 2008 Share Posted 5 November , 2008 Missed that David - thanks. Still a comparatively gentle discussion, Prof Reynolds should be very pleased. Jim
Charles Fair Posted 5 November , 2008 Share Posted 5 November , 2008 A very good programme - good on the broad context as well as Ludendorff's state of mind in the closing months of the war.
