The Times of 1 Mar 1916 shows that he died in hospital in Cawnpore from pneumonia. With a special memorial at Hambledon does this mean that his body was repatriated?

Almost certainly not.

When the WW1 graves in much of India were declared 'unmaintainable' by CWGC and the names inscribed on memorials elsewhere, this plaque was probably accepted as his commemoration site rather than add him to a memorial in India.
