Major Dugan 1st Leinster Field Message book

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I was lucky yesterday to found a field message book (# 153) with the name of the owner " Major Dugan - Leinster Regt".

Some copies of messages are still in the booklet, dated for Feb and March 1915, sketches of St Eloi sector, belgium places names as Zevecoton, Chateau at Kruisstraathoek, Voormezeele, Dickiebusch,..

An other name " J.V. Meredith Capt " wrote too some messages.

On 8/2/15 at Dickbusch , Meredith wrote to 82nd Inf Bde:

" Casualties during last 24 hours:

Lieut Mackenzie - Killed

Lieut Haddick - Wounded

2 Men Killed

7 Men wounded.."

I assume that the unit is 1st Leinsters from the 27th Division in action near St Eloi Flanders.

Could you identify these Officers , especially this Major Dugan ?

At the other end of the book, entries shows " Curragh 22-11-16 5th Bn -...

thanks

Florent

Just came across this thread. This Major Dugan was a cousin of my grandfather. I didn't know that he had served in France. He was 46 at the outbreak of the war. By 1918 he was depot commander at Birr. He was the elder brother of Winston J. Dugan who was a battalion commander (2nd Royal Irish Regiment) and later a brigade commander and assistant inspector of training. I would be grateful for copies of some of the message book. Thanks for the medal card. Regards, J. Duggan

This may be a relation. The cutting is from the Kings County Chronicle.

The Dugan's often appear in this paper. I passed them by as they survived the war and my only interest in in casualties.

Enjoy.

Florent does not seem to have posted for quite a while so I am probably talking to myself, but there are a couple of refs to Lt Haddick in 'Stand To' by F.C. Hitchcock.

Haddick recovered from his wounds as he was posted to the 2nd battalion - 27/9/16 "2nd Lieutenants Haddick and Sikes joined the battalion.....Haddick was posted to C company".

1/10/16 "2nd Lieutenant Haddick was invalided to the base".

I have only now come back to this forum. So I didn’t see your post before now. Other interests etc.

Francis Rogers Dugan was born at 45, Clarendon Street, Derry on 2nd June 1868. His father was an Inspector of National Schools (primary schools). The family settled in Birr, County Offaly. The depot of the Leinster Regiment was nearby at Crinkle. Francis Dugan enrolled at Queen's College Galway (now National University of Ireland Galway) on 30th October 1886 but he did not graduate from there. The earliest record I have of him in the British Army is his transfer from Lieutenant in the 9th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps to Second Lieutenant in the Prince of Wales's Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians), on 12th March, 1892 from the London Gazette. I have 20 entries for him from the London Gazette. He fought in the Boer War and was depot commander at Birr on the outbreak of the First World War. He ended the war as a Lieutenant Colonel. He retired in 1919 and died at Nice in 1933.
