Chris_Baker Posted 3 November , 2008 Share Posted 3 November , 2008 HM Armoured Trawler Longset was lost on 6 February 1917. Can anyone please give details of the circumstances? Were any lives lost? Is there are crew list somewhere? I am looking for a very elusive individual by the name of David Henrickson (spelling may vary). He is given as a fireman on board Longset by a Grimsby roll of men who served.
ionia Posted 3 November , 2008 Share Posted 3 November , 2008 A minesweeping trawler, she was lost as a result of striking a mine off Nell's Point, Barry Island. The mines may have been laid by UC46 which was sunk by the destroyer HMS LIBERTY two days later on 8th February.
Michael Lowrey Posted 3 November , 2008 Share Posted 3 November , 2008 Chris, Should be HMT, I should think. And in any case, the Longset sank on a mine off Nell’s Point, Barry Island, south Wales. Eight dead; seven survivors. The mine had been laid by the German minelaying submarine UC 46, which in turn was sunk with all hands on February 8, 1917 while homebound off Calais (a contact of mine has dived the wreck). The casualty list: BOWDEN, George, Deck Hand, RNR, DA 9272 BULLOCK, William E, Engineman, RNR, ES 4953 BUSH, Ronald, Ordinary Telegraphist, RNVR, London Z 5703 HAGUE, William, Deck Hand, RNR, DA 5611 KINRADE, Alfred, Seaman, RNR, A 8047 MUIR, Thomas F, Ty/Lieutenant, RNR POOLE, Walter F W, Deck Hand, RNR, DA 13351 SANDERS, Herbert H, Trimmer, RNR, ST 3088 Best wishes, Michael
Chris_Baker Posted 3 November , 2008 Author Share Posted 3 November , 2008 Thank you for such quick and valuable responses. I think I shall assume my man was RNR and see what I can find.
Guest Posted 22 May , 2020 Share Posted 22 May , 2020 William Hague mentioned above was my maternal grandfather. It is only in the last year that I have found his grave in Scartho Road cemetery Grimsby. Erected by his sister, I assume my Granmother Hague as a widow with 2 children had no money for it. Lawrence Grant Posted 2 April Share Posted 2 April It seems that Thomas Frederick Muir was a distant cousin of mine. I only found this out today from Ancestry, ca . It was an exciting find.
