My wifes Great Uncle and the reason why we became so interested in the First World War

Thomas Gibson. 6th Battalion Border Reg. Died of wounds 22/10/1916 aged 26. Buried in Etretet Churchyard.

Entry in the Westmorland Gazette.

Died of wounds on the 22nd October at No1 General Hospital Etretet. He was wounded on the 28th September while manning his Lewis gun in an attack on the German lines above Thiepval (Hessian Trench we believe) and was carried to the dressing station (three miles) by four German prisoners, being admitted to the hospital on the 30th. From the outset his condition was grave and it was only his great pluck and vitality that keep him alive for so long. He was wounded in the head, right hand and arm, and right thigh (serious) and his condition was further complicated by bronchial pneumonia from exposure. Along with four other heroes, he was laid to rest on Monday afternoon in the soldiers cemetery with full British and French military honours.

May he rest in peace.
