kildaremark Posted 15 October , 2008 Share Posted 15 October , 2008 This man was a Sgt Major who was promoted to Quatermaster with the Honorary rank of lieutenant in 1900 during Boer War. According to the London Gazette he was granted the honorary rank of Capt in April 1910 and honorary rank of Major in April 1913. He was mentioned in dispatches in 1901. He has no MIC for 1914-18. Can anyone enlighten me about Honorary ranks or this man - I would assume if he remained during war he would have been with a training depot? Muerrisch Posted 17 October , 2008 Share Posted 17 October , 2008 Quatermasters commissioned from the ranks [and almost all were] were given 'non-combatant commissions' as Quartermasters which did not give them full officers' messing status. To remedy this, QMs were accorded Hon rank. Pre-war, in some regiments, this still meant they were not full mess members. Subsequent promotions could be as high as Major and, exceptionally, as Lt Col., but always the rank was Hon. Pay was commensurate, fortunately!
