Brevet Major Phillip Stafford Gordon WAINMAN, killed in action 26th September 1915, appointed Brevet Major after his death......how can this be?

Why was he promoted if he had been killed?

From the school archives:

Brevet Major Phillip Gordon Stafford WAINMAN, killed in action 26th September 1915, aged 36, buried in Vermelles Cemetery.

1897 Joined RMA, 1898 2nd Lt Worcestshire Regt, served in SA War, appointed Captain 1902, 1906-9 Adjt. 6th Devons (TF), then Special Reserve, in 1914 re-joined Worcestshire Regiment as Captain, went to France, twice MID'd, killed 26/09/15, appointed Brevet Major on the Field after his death......

and that's all I know!

it is highly likely his file is still at PRO, and at least possible that the answer to the mystery is on that file. My next is visit is some time off, and I am sure a Pal will be in before me.

My guess is that is brevet CAME THROUGH post mortem, but bearing a date when was still alive.
