Hello Hywyn.  I have been able recently to enter Welsh obituaries into Google and get what feels like a reasonable translation.  If you have anything relevant in Welsh about the Llanberis men in 14th Battalion RWF, I would be grateful to have it.  Anne

Hello to all,

I'm researching my Great Grandfather, Sgt G H Randall, 14th RWF, professional solder pre WW1 joined up again 1914, transferred to 14th RWF in April 1915...Wounded in Action at Mametz and sent off to hospital in Boulogne.

have researched National Archives and got a surprising amount of information, kind of lucky i guess his records werent destroyed in WW2, fascinated to read them all and the Regimental diarries and all.     I rather wondered if anyone had any photographs othe 14th in that period where he may casually pop up in ?.......why o why didnt i listen to my Nan all those years ago...

any help appreciated.....

The forum expert on the Joneses of Hirael is @Thomas Jones. Perhaps you already know him or are related. He should respond to this tag shortly.

I'm honoured to be the Hirael 'expert'!! :)

Marc, here are a couple of photos of Sgt. W G Jones DCM.

This will make a great photo to display with his medals.  Do you have his original medals?

Not confirmed but its possible this photo was taken during his DCM MM medal award ceremony.

Here, Willie Gordon is stood on the right with my Great Grandfather Arthur Owen Jones with the cap.  They both attended the 2nd 14th Battalion RWF Reunion in Llandinam 1937.  Both lived in Hirael, Arthur was 7 Seiriol Road,  Would have travelled together by train.  I have the full size photo of all the attendees at the reunion.  I can to pm it to you if you want?

No problem Dai.  I've been interested in W G Jones' story for a while and it's good to get the information in one place for all to see if he is searched up again.

That's amazing and great news you have his medals.  I had heard they were in the RWF Museum in Caernarfon, but they are actually in your museum in Southport :)

Will be great to see them on the forum

Best, Tom

According to my father it was Willie's wish that they never went on display at the muesuem and where kept within the family. we have respected his wishes and will continue to do so ... I will upload pics shortly

That's great to hear his wishes are being respected Marc and also great the medals are still within the family.  So many people are hunting their families medals nowadays.  Like these families, we too are hoping to find a few sets of medals and 2 Memorial Plaques.  May be impossible but we are hopeful.

Looking forward to seeing your medals posted,

Tom

Hi Marc,

Only just spotted this.  I went to see Willie Gordon a few weeks before he died, to try to set up a proper interview when I could tape him for a thesis I was writing on local recruiting in north-west Wales 1914-16.  I was (born and) living in Bangor at the time, and he was kind enough to see me even though he wasn't in the best of health then.  We had a short talk, and he showed me some of the reunion photos.  Sadly, he passed away before the interview could be properly set up, which I much regret.

Very glad to know that the medals are still with the family.  All the best,

Clive

Hi Clive, I remember you telling me about your chat with Willie Gordon when I first joined the forum.  Were the Reunion photos that Willy G had his personal photos or the same photos as in the '37 Reunion Memento?  Would be great to see if they were photos he took himself of the week. cheers, Tom
