War Animals

I have a photograph that I would like to know more about and would appreciate any help you can give.

The photograph is a studio shot of a uniformed French soldier with a dog. The German Shepherd dog

is standing next to the seated soldier, but his front paws are resting on the man's legs. The man

is wearing a braided medal over his shoulder that appears, when looked at closely, to have a dog's

head on it. What can be discerned from this photograph? Also, I will be in London during the Easter

holiday and would like any suggestions on my time spent there in researching this photograph.

Thank you in advance!

The use of dogs is described in: Baker, P.S. ANIMAL WAR HEROES. 1933, 130 pages, 22x15 cm., A. & c. Black Ldt. No photgraphs though apart from the heroes themselves.

Regards,

Marco
