NigelS Posted 18 September , 2008 Share Posted 18 September , 2008 In the New York Times archive I chanced upon a report of an accident involving two RFC men burnt to death on the 24th December '17 at Hicks Field, Fort Worth, Texas when their plane crashed to the ground, having hit a "side slip" at 200ft, and caught fire after the fuel tank ruptured. The NYT report names them as 2nd Lieut. Reinbooth of Bury St. Edmunds and Cadet Manson of Canada. Investigation revealed that the article had got the facts slightly wrong with the CWGC records showing that the airmen involved were 2nd Lieut. Lawrence Rainboth of Ontario, and Cadet Manson of Bury St Edmunds. Manson is buried at Fort Worth (Greenwood) Memorial Park, USA and Rainboth at Aylmer (St Paul's) Roman Catholic cemetery in Canada. The CWGC historical notes for Fort Worth (Greenwood) Memorial Park gives the following which explains their presence in the USA: "In 1917 and 1918, units of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Air Force were stationed at the Fort Worth flying field under a reciprocal arrangement between the American and Canadian air services. Fort Worth Greenwood Memorial Park contains a Royal Air Force Plot, marked by a central memorial, in which are buried 11 Commonwealth airmen of the First World War." (oddly, the CWGC photograph of the plot appears to show 12 CWGC headstones; the twelfth, unless I'm mistaken, is just showing to the right of the memorial) This set me wondering as to how many other Commonwealth casualties might be buried in the USA; it doesn't look as if it's possible - at least I've had no luck - to search for burials in US - unless the cemetery or casualty name is known - using the CWGC site (either directly, or indirectly by using Geoff's 14-18 search engine). Has anyone else come across details of Commonwealth casualties buried in the USA or have any idea of possible numbers? NigelS
Malcolm Posted 18 September , 2008 Share Posted 18 September , 2008 Not Great War but the graves of Airmen killed in training at Mesa City Arizona in WW2 are honoured every year by the local school kids. There are 23 graves. There are 16 Cemeteries in New York with CWGC graves. Aye Malcolm
NigelS Posted 18 September , 2008 Author Share Posted 18 September , 2008 Thanks Malcolm, a quick scan though on those shows the majority to be, as would be expected, Canadian & Naval men (Royal & Merchant & reserves, Marines etc), fewer RFC/RAF and even fewer Army (mostly, it seems, post Armistice with addresses in the US, so possibly in many case dying after returning home) NigelS
Stephen Nulty Posted 19 September , 2008 Share Posted 19 September , 2008 One of "my" men is Butcher John Sharkey (Mercantile Marine Reserve) of HMS "Virginian", died 23/03/1918 and buried in Brooklyn Holy Cross Cemetery. I found out recently that his grave is looked after the the Canadian office of CWGC, and they kindly provided me with a picture of his headstone. Terry Denham Posted 20 September , 2008 Share Posted 20 September , 2008 Nigel Sorry for delayed reply (holiday intervened!). There are 472 cemeteries in the USA containing Commonwealth War Graves from both WW1 and WW2. They contain 992 graves.

NigelS Posted 23 September , 2008 Author Share Posted 23 September , 2008 Battlefield Photographer & Terry - Thanks for the list and the additions & revisions. I came across a set of photos of the memorial, a plaque giving further details of the RFC's presence there, and the graves at Forth Worth at: http://flickr.com/photos/46749779@N00/510000222 and these confirmed that there are twelve burials: the twelfth, is not listed on the CWGC records because he died in 1975; the details given with the picture are: Robert M Herbert Lieutentant Royal Flying Corps 22 September 1895 18 February 1975 along with the touching explanation for his burial there: Robert Herbert requested internment at Greenwood cemetery to rest with his friends. I have been unable to trace a UK birth or death for him, so he may, like some of his fellow aviators who are buried in this plot, have been a Canadian or American who had enlisted in the RFC/RAF. Rather eerily the first time I ran through the names on the headstones I only listed eleven names, and it wasn't until I scanned through them the second time that I discovered the name that I'd missed was Herbert's; Yesterday (22nd September) was the 113th anniversary of his Birth. RIP NigelS
Carmania Posted 23 September , 2008 Share Posted 23 September , 2008 Nigel Robert M Herbert was an American, born in New York. His name appears amongst the list of passengers aboard the SS Sicilian which arrived at St John's, New Brunswick on 30th December 1918 having left Liverpool on 17th December. His home adress was 15t Seaman Avenue, New York. There was the following handwritten note by his name: 'Joined British Army Nov 22 1917'. He died in Jacksonville Florida on 18th February 1975. paul guthrie Posted 23 September , 2008 Share Posted 23 September , 2008 The man In Lexington Kentucky is John Benjamin French a black man who served in Canadian Forestry Corps. I had Ottawa CWGC replace his badly deteriorated headstone a few years ago. He was a boot black and jockey who died of TB in Montreal n 1920. Several years later it was decided it had to be service related. The man in Louisville Cave Hill is John Henry Hartley, MGC. I did a Stand To! article on him. He was here training troops when he died age 37. The men at Camp Zachary Taylor , named for a Kentuckian who was President, bought a very nice stone engraved with his details and the Rupert Brooke some corner of a foreign field language. I need to know about the man in Louisville Zachary Taylor Cemetery. Terry, have you got that? Somewhere I have the CWGC accounting of all US burials. In that cemetery is Willie Sandlin of Leslie County in the eastern Kentucky coal fields/mountains where I am from. He's Kentucky's only WW1 MOH recpient. After the war the people of tha dirt poor remote county bought a farm for him and unlike the Tennessee people who bought one for Alvin York paid it off. He was buried there but when his widow moved to Louisville she took him with her. Honest to God he was from Devil's Jump Branch of Hell For Certain Creek. Drummy Posted 28 September , 2008 Share Posted 28 September , 2008 The above three are all buried in a collective grave, William was from my home town and forms part of ongoing research re WW2 local casualties, there was an article on him in the local paper, dated 6.5.44, which i have not yet obtained that may answer some queries. Possible initial suggestion is that they were on a flight within India / Burma theatre of operations, which also contained US crew and crashed. All remains being repatriated to US as impossible to seperate?
Terry Denham Posted 28 September , 2008 Share Posted 28 September , 2008 Drummy If the story of mixed remains in an air crash is correct, then the burial in the USA is understandable. The rule applied when casualties of Commonwealth and non-Commonwealth nationalities are involved and cannot be seperated is that the remains are dealt with under the regulations of the country from which the majority of casualties came. If these three were mixed with a larger number of US troops, they would have been dealt with by the US system which allowed repatriation and hence their removal to the USA for burial. The more famous example of this are the British war correspondents who died in just such circumstances in Burma and are buried in Arlington National Cemetery in the USA. NigelS Posted 29 September , 2008 Author Share Posted 29 September , 2008 Are you referring to Orde Wingate and the crew he died with in Burma? http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?p...;GRid=1117& The CWGC records for Drummy's three men gives their burials in a common grave, at Louisville Zachary Taylor reference: Sec. E. Coll. grave 249/250. As these men are also in a common grave, it does possibly suggest similar circumstances to the death of Orde Wingate, his ADC, two war corresponents & the five American personnel buried together at Arlington, with the bodies unable to be individually identified, but are there any American (or other non Commonwealth) personnel buried in the same grave at Louisville, is there any way of easily finding out? there are probably too many graves in this cemetery to run through and identify possibilities using Find-a-grave (at least not without spending a considerable amount of time searching for other burials who diedon the same day); One major difference between this and Wingate's death is that these three men are all from the ranks, and likely to have been on more routine duties(?) Nick62 Posted 20 October , 2008 Share Posted 20 October , 2008 Slightly earlier than the remit of CWGC, but here's a grave in Lincoln, Massachusetts of some soldiers killed during the retreat from Concord on April 19, 1775. As you can see, they are commemorated by the local Minutemen every April 19 (the original "Patriot's Day" before that term started being used for 9/11, and still a Massachusetts state holiday). Tom Lang Posted 16 December , 2012 Share Posted 16 December , 2012 This is an extremely interesting topic. I live in Dallas, Texas, and plan to visit the following Texas cemeteries in the New Year (that'll give time for the Xmas & New Year traffic to disappear): Trip 1: Bridgeport Ft Worth Granbury (CWGC says one WW1 grave is there) Trip 2: Cushing McKnight Cemetery Palestine (New Addition Annexe) Terrell If anyone has any comments, suggestions, etc., I'd be delighted to make sure I get all the right photographs. The other Texas cemeteries are out of range of me for a 1-day trip (Texas IS a BIG place). Tom.

Tom Lang Posted 17 December , 2012 Share Posted 17 December , 2012 That link seems to be broken-- I only get a 404 message. Please relink. I found the same broken link. It may be because the CWGC revamped their website a few months ago. I managed to get a 'list' by using the "Find a Cemetery" tab. This then asks for which country, and for the US gives you 33 pages of cemetery information, with about 10 per page. You can open individual cemetery links and get more details of the individual burials. Hope this help. Tom.

Tom Lang Posted 25 July , 2013 Share Posted 25 July , 2013 Graves 1 thru 12 - Gravestones at Greenwood Memorial Park Cemetery, Ft Worth, Texas. I numbered the graves in my photos (from left to right around the Memorial) 1 to 6 (front row) and 7 to 12 (back row). I visited the cemetery a couple of days after the Memorial Day holiday in the US. The wreaths and flowers were already there. It was an unusually grey and windy day in Texas. I purchased the Remembrance Crosses and Poppies from the Lady Haig Poppy Factory in Edinburgh, and placed 1 on each grave.
