Pals,

10 years after the private publication of my history of the 'Old Olavian' Fallen was released on November 11th 1998, I am happy to report to you that a presentation with remembrance details and a photograph of each of the 192 'Fallen' from this great old London school, previously in Bermondsey and now in Orpington, is now on the School's website. The presentation can be downloaded in about 3-4 minutes for those interested. When you enter the site, click on 'Welcome' then on 'Chaplaincy' and scroll to the bottom. The quality of the digital scans is variable, but better than nothing. This is the first time the School has allowed the honour roll books to be copied and made available online.

Some basic stats:

117 were Ranks

3 MM's

5 MC's

23 NCO's were MID

Fantastic - I am into Tank Corps. I can give you a better date for Pte W R Berrow rather than Dec 1917.

According to docs at NA he was reported missing on 23/11/1917.

Hope that helps - can send you copies by email if you want proof before changing it.

I notice a few blanks in your list - to help get the info, hopefully in one large go why do you not list the names and information wanted ie Regiment needed and dated of death and post it on this site.

I belong also to the British Medal Forum and can post it their as well to see what you get.

There will be alot of fellow collectors out their who should have the information you require at their finger tips as they are experts in certain regiments etc.

Hope this helps

Pals,

at the suggestion of Simon, who spotted that there are gaps in the data for some of the 'Fallen', I am providing some indexes from the book.

If any Pals can help with the wheareabouts of the final resting place or memorial for the following from the list, please let me know:

Lewis Berrow, William Dale-James, John Weatherston, Leonard Bendixen, Donald Boone and Gilbert Doyle.

Furthermore, I welcome any documents, anecdotal evidence, photo's, copies of ephemera relating to St Olaves and Bermondsey 1914-19 (particularly the Cadet Corps) and in particular to the individuals boys who died for their country.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is the name index from the book: Till all our fight be fought, The Olavian 'Fallen' and the Great War 1914-18:

Name Index

Abbreviation and explanation: The School Prize List records reveal that certain Students won Athletic distinctions for specific sporting achievements. In addition, each prize giving service updated the latest academic achievements of those on the ‘Honour List’. These were Students excelling in some form of Further Education. Both of these groups are highlighted in the Index.

The publication holds a centre piece of a selection of thirty six reproduced portrait photographs of some of the Olavian Fallen taken from the Roll of Honour by kind permission of the Governors of St Olave’s and St Saviours Grammar School. The provision of a Photograph is indicated in the Index.

Where two dates appear in bold type in closed brackets, for example.. (1880-87), this signifies the duration of the Individuals time at St Olaves as a Student. Where a Specific date is provided, with day, month and year printed in Italics, for example, 1/11/14, this represents the date of the individuals death, from wounds or disease, or the date on which the individuals were perceived to be missing presumed dead.

Here's the prologue and introduction to the book:

Prologue

‘He whom this scroll commemorates was numbered among those who, at the call of King and Country, left all that was dear to them, endured hardness, faced danger, and finally passed out of the sight of men by the path of duty and self sacrifice, giving up their own lives that others might live in freedom. Let those who come after see to it that his name be not forgotten.’

The tribute of King George V to the members of His Majesty’s forces that died as a result of the Great War 1914 to 1918, still arouses strong sentiments.

This book, written in preparation for the eightieth anniversary of the Armistice, attempts to go some distance to upholding that sentiment. In a time when most younger people have no experience of war, when traditional ideas concerning duty, morality, national pride and religion are being questioned and sometimes undermined, it is important to reflect on what life was like for the ‘Olavian Fallen’.

What sent them off to war with such enthusiasm, why did they not moan and reject the harshness of their life, why did some resign themselves so readily to the loss of their young lives. How did they live, what kind of individuals were they, what might they have achieved if they had lived longer lives. What did they do to distinguish themselves in the short time that was allowed them. What were the circumstances of their deaths, and how can we, their ‘collective’ children, nephews, grandchildren, great nephews, and great grandchildren, live up to their hopes, their values, their standards. Certainly, by the end of this story of the Olavians and the Great War, we should be motivated to try.

Times may change, but all Olavians have a commonality with these men. We were all at one time their age, and took the opportunity to pass through the halls and corridors of a fine School with its own culture, history and expectations. Society in the world at large has changed, but an Olavian will always be an Olavian, despite the change in buildings, uniforms, sports and syllabi.

Brett-Smiths anthem, sung eagerly at ‘OO’ Dinners in London each year, continues that sense of pride endemic in the pre war era. ‘Olaf to raise the song, Olaf to bear along, Olaf to right the wrong…………

Till all our fight be fought…….. this is a tribute to the ‘Fallen’

Introduction

One hundred and ninety-two men died as far as the School was advised. Many others may have perished on the battlefields, who to date, are not commemorated. Seventy-five were Officers, one hundred and seventeen were in the ranks. Three won the Military Medal - Stephen Bishopp, Fred Husk and Thomas Jones, and Five, the Military Cross - William Halliwell, Robert Hearn, Douglas Oake, Sid Terry and Arthur Vernall.

There were twenty-three NCO’s and four men were ‘mentioned in despatches’ - Fred Defries, William Oliver, John Hood and Fred Husk, . The eldest Olavian to fall was Harold Ryley Senior ex Pupil and Master, followed closely by Beaumont Fletcher, a friend of HG Abel, both men well into their forties, and the youngest just sixteen years. Twenty-six of the Honour List didn’t leave School until the war had commenced.

Three Masters were gazetted as Officers and died as a result of the conflict - Cecil Edmunds, Grantley Le Chavetois and Harold Ryley Senior. The highest ranked Officer amongst the ‘Fallen’ was Major Fred Bennett; he was accompanied by fourteen Captains, twenty-one Lieutenants and thirty-six Second Lieutenants.

Nine School Captains lost their lives; eight of them had held the post between 1911 and 1917. The practice at that time of two Captains per year meant that from 1911 to 1915, all six had perished, with one from 1916 and one from 1917. Their combined intellect, sophistication, academic excellence and commitment had to be marvelled at… the names alone mean much to many Old Olavians through the Century…..

Howard Keesey, ‘the intellectual’; Leslie Sanders, ‘the realist’; Noel Hamilton, ‘the cultured Irishman’; Fred Norris, the ‘Hertford winner’; Didi Maybrook, ‘the Archaelogist’; Olly Wade, ‘the Scientist’; Jimmy Jones, ‘the All rounder’; Teddy Cock, ‘the Mercurial Artist’; and Vic Budd, ‘the Submarine chaser’

Of the War’s survivors, one received the Victoria Cross - Alf Pollard, two, the Distinguished Service Order - AJ Pelling and SW Bunker; The DSM went to AW Herbert and the DCM to HE Bowman, Pollard again and Monte Richardson.

Twenty-four surviving Olavians in total were awarded the Military Cross (including Pollard). Another ten received the Military Medal, and a further thirteen were mentioned in despatches.

Six Olavians received foreign honours for their part in various activities:

the Order of Leopold 1 of Belgium to AJ Pelling; the Belgian Croix de Guerre to Messrs Olivier and Pelling; the Cavaliere of the Order of St Maurice and St Lazarus, to SW Bunker; the Medialle Militaire to WB Betts, the French Croix de Guerre, to Messrs Barton and Bradly, and finally the Legion of Honour to Bradly.

Despite their many academic and athletic differences, the Olavians that joined the British forces in the Great War, were attracted mainly to the Infantry, and were developed through the familiar process of Cadet Corps, London Regiment training and then on to other Regiments when commissioned. Seventy-nine recruits augmented the ranks of the thirty-three London regiments, before some left to gain commissions.

The cross section of Regimental choice for Olavians was broad, starting with ‘premier’ line regiments like, the Grenadier Guards (the Harvard brothers), the Bedfordshires (Roeber and Stables) and the Royal Berkshires (Taffs and Lansdale), through to ‘second ranks’ like the Yorkshires (Dell), the Wiltshires (Maybrook, Terry and P.Grant) and the Royal Sussex (Knifton, Knox and Rings).

Some however, ventured into other spheres of highly technical work, and highly risky, but adventurous branches of the services.

Nine Olavian Fallen had been gradually seconded from the Infantry into the fledgling Royal Flying Corps. Seven of them were Officers and Pilots flying DH2’s, Sobwith Strutters, BE2’s and Nieuport 17’s.

Fifteen joined the Artillery: Royal Garrison, Royal Field, Royal Horse and, the Honourable Artillery Company, in various capacities - Seven were Officers with Bennett, the senior Olavian Officer, amongst them.

Five worked in the Royal Army Medical Corps, with either relevant experience or on religious grounds, as Stretcher-bearers.

Seven were attached to the Royal Navy or the Volunteer Reserve; They served on a variety of Ships including HMS Lysander, Phaeton, Louvain, Queen Mary. Some were at Jutland and some flew sea missions as part of the Royal Naval Air Service.

2 were in the early Tank Corps from Flers Courcelette in 1916 to Cambrai in later 1917 and after; Five were in the new Machine Gun corps.

All in all, the Olavian Fallen served in over sixty-five different Regiments, Batteries, Squadrons, Ship’s Companies, Tunnelling Companies, and Brigades. If ever a group of individuals were ‘representative’ of the War’s entire experience, it was these men.

They served on the Home front, in the mud, cold and rain of the Flanders plain and the French farmlands, in the hills and mountains of northern Italy, in the deserts of Palestine and Mesopotamia, on the beaches of Turkey, and the sparse countryside of Salonika.

Some Olavians stood out for their contribution to a specific arm of the services whether Engineers, Medics, Gunners, Seaman, Flyers, or exponents of the new Tank and Machine Gun technology. Others showed their courage, fortitude and commitment in the, by now, well known campaigns of the War.

Four died as a result of Gallipoli in summer 1915; eight in the Middle East in 1917/8; The several battles of the Ypres area between 1914 and 1917 took the lives of thirty-five; The Somme campaign of 1916 was responsible for the death of twenty-three men, three of whom were killed on the infamous 1st July (Hocking, Prout and S.Weatherston);

The Kaisers Offensive in March 1918 led to the demise of another thirteen, with Bapaume, Peronne and the Hindenburg Line increasing the ‘Pro Patria Mortui’ lists in the School magazine, by another nineteen. Even after the signing of the Armistice, more returning and weakened boys and men added to the final number by another eleven - some claimed by the Influenza virus circulating over the Winter of 1918/9.

These were all clever, educated, committed boys and men; they were a cut above, and their lives, though short, provide strong example. We must remember what they gave up for us.

Sorry nothing on Pte Platt - it was a class system in those days. If you were an officer your name was put down otherwise it was 6 other ranks arrived. Have even see Lt H A Smith Killed and 7 other ranks.

Good to know their regiment thought of them when they died for King and Country.

My suggest would be to email the Tank Musuem and tell them the name and battalion they my have the Battalion muster their??

Jonathan,

if youhave any additional details you want to give me ref. Curtis, Harris and Wade, please fee free to do so.

A has been pointed out these officers all served with the Queen's Own (Royal West Kent) Regiment.

At this time I have nothing further on Curtis.

Harris was a school teacher and volunteered in August or September 1914 and was posted to 6 Bn. I have PM'd you regarding further information on Harris.

Wade was born at Purley 1st May 1896. Enlisted early 1915 into 10 Bn but I am not sure what path his military career then took. 10 Bn went to F&F in June 1916 but I have noted that Wade returned to UK from Alexandria 08/06/1916. His Aero Club Certificate 3343 was obtained on 24/07/1916 -this can be accessed via ancestry and should have a photo; rank of Flying Officer Sept 1916; France [45 Sqn] 12/10/1916.

Wade was KIA 22/10/1916 - when flying 7786 Sopwith Strutter on a patrol over Bapaume and Peronne. His observer/gun-layer was 2/Lt Thuell. Left aerodrome at 10:15am and claimed in German message to have both been KIA in combat over Les Boeufs at 10:50am by Ltn E. Bohme Ja2.

Peter -I have just looked up his aero certificate on Ancestry. I cant post it here but happy o send youa copy if you send me yr direct e-address.

It states he was 9 Bn - this was a Reserve Bn and would explain why he was in Egypt, presumably attached to a different unit.

His address was Downe, near Orpington and he obtained his aero certificate flying a Maurice Farman biplane at Thetford. It gives his date of death as 1 June 1917 and I notice St Olaves register states he failed to return on 16 Nov 1916. These dates obviously contradict the CWGC that gives KIA 22 Oct 1916 - and corroborated by Sky Their Battlefield.

Hi Peter - I am researching men from Stockwell, London. Sidney F. Terry is remembered on a plaque once at Stockwell Green United Reform Church and now stored at West Norwood Cemetery (photo attached) - it was moved when the church was sold.

I was wondering if you would mind if I used your image of Terry on my website: www.stockwellwarmemorial.co.uk. Also any additional information would be very useful too. Do you have a full biography?

I will be adding a section on the names on the plaque to the website, which currently only has names from the clock tower. I am hoping to find a good location for the memorial, as currently it is kept under a cloth in the crematorium.

Many thanks

Fantastic - I am into Tank Corps. I can give you a better date for Pte W R Berrow rather than Dec 1917.

According to docs at NA he was reported missing on 23/11/1917.

Hope that helps - can send you copies by email if you want proof before changing it.

Simon,

please do send any more accurate information on WR Berrow to me

Sidney Bowler Weatherston was a bellringer at Southwark Cathedral, he is commemorated on the Central Council for Church Bell Ringers' Roll of Honour, online version http://www.cccbr.org.uk/rolls/casualties/details.php?warID=1&casID=819926, the site also has images of the original book, which is held at St Paul's. In addition to the Cathedral Society, he was a member of the London County Association. Do you have any more info on him other than what appears online? Was the John Frederick Weatherston RNVR on the previous page of the book a brother?

To one and all,

My book - Till all our fight be fought - The Olavian Fallen and the Great War, will be republished to coincide with the centenary of the start of the Great War. It will also be revised with regard to all of the 192 Fallen and all portrait images will be included in the book which this time will be properly bound and with new glossy cover. The Old Olavians Society are to finance the book through the WFA and Reveille Press.

Two points:

1/ If you have any information to share on any of the Olavian Fallen or indeed survivors and you would like this to be included in the book, please reply to this topic.

2/ If you think you would be interested in a copy and want to let me know, please do.

Does any body know, is there a quick way to check all 192 of the Fallen from St Olaves against their London Gazette entries ? I need to compile any relevant activity....

Also, same question ref. the Army and Navy Lists.

It would have to be individually done for the gazette but try using google - search for 'London gazette' and append what your looking for e.g 'London gazette 6792 Smith' and it often gives better results than the LG's own search facility.
