The West Gun

Reading the 3rd Hussars history by Willcox and he refers to the West Gun being issued for trial in 1915, the testing officer being seriously injured in the face by the spring. Searching for 'West Gun' brought only a lot of useless threads. What exactly is this gun? Any pictures?

This is the one in the reserve collection of the IWM, and the colour shot is a recently unearthed West catapult, found in France. I am not jealous, I am not jealous, I am not..........yes I am!!
