swellal Posted 13 August , 2008 Share Posted 13 August , 2008 I am currently transcribing the War Diary for the 21st Battalion CEF and I've come across the entries that were recorded when 2 escaped POWs came into their lines. One was from the 1st W/Yorks and the other from the 2nd S/Staffs. If anyone is interested in these reports, which include the Intelligence gathered from them before they were returned to their units, please email me (addy below). The soldier's names are: 10191 L/Cpl N. Ashly, 1st W/Yorks and 30891 Pte C Botten, 2nd S/Staffs.

swellal Posted 13 August , 2008 Author Share Posted 13 August , 2008 that number is for Horace Ashby West Yorks. I just posted it as it is recorded. I have no skills in researching BEF soldiers.
auchonvillerssomme Posted 13 August , 2008 Share Posted 13 August , 2008 Lucky that they are recorded at all and I think the war diary writers can be forgiven wrong names, they got the numbers right. Mick
Nigel Marshall Posted 14 August , 2008 Share Posted 14 August , 2008 Hi, Looking at the MIC for Pte/Sjt Ashby, I have a hunch that he has transferred to 45th Royal Fusiliers for the North Russian campaign. Any informed opinion to confirm this or correct me? Cheers, Nigel
