Remembered Today:

Who commanded the divisions?

Evening all,

I'm trying to find out who commanded the 24th Division and wondered if anyone could point me in the direction of a breakdown of the British Army in WWI, right from the likes of Haig at the top, down through the divisions to the individual brigade?

I'm basically trying to locate as much info as possible on my great great uncle, who fought in the 24th, 108th Brigade RFA, D Battery!

Thanks,

Chris

The Kew Catalogue gives only one War Diary for 108 Brigade RFA,and that covers only from Sep 1915 to Dec 1916,it's WO95/2197. There might be another under the Division,or in a Division file, but it's not showing for me !

Hi Sotonmate,

Thanks very much for researching it for me, your help is much appreciated!

I believe that he only started serving with the RFA in 1917, as previously he was serving on the HMS Ramilles. Not sure how it transpired that he left the Ramilles and joined the RFA, but there you go!!

I now see from the Long Long Trail that 108 became part of an Army Brigade (XXIII?) in Jan 1917 so the key to finding out is with some nice Artillery specialist here who can point you at the War Diary you need. That page also suggests that 108 was with 24 Div after the date shown as the end of the War Diary I have mentioned above,so there should be coverage within 24 Div still. I scanned all the elements of 24 Div and didn't find another period for 108. Again, maybe an expert can comment.

Evening Sotonmate,

I believe the artillery division in question became a part of the 5th Army when it left the 27th division in 1917. For this reason, I believe he may only have served in the 5th Army. Unfortunately when I search the engines for 5th Army information I get mostly American pages!!

Regards,

Chris
