The Jolly Olds

Hello

I have a postcard written from Belgium dated 19th Oct 1916 - a picture showing 12 men with a small dog and it is signed as 'the Jolly Olds' - does anyone recognise this name - presuming a unit?

Many thanks

Gill

I guess it could just be a group of mates who joined up together, from a particular workplace, village, sports team or whatever.

Hi Pat and Yorts

On the back of the card it says 'To dearest Father and Mother' on the anniversary of your marriage from Edgar, Belgium Oct 19th 1916. (The Jolly Olds).

Would particular groups, friends adopt names like this?

Thanks for the help.

Gill

Given that this group contains several Cpl's , Senior NCOs and a Warrant Officer of the Royal Engineers, I wouldn't mind a bet that this is some sort of "in joke" from men of the same unit.
