Andrea22 Posted 7 August , 2008 Share Posted 7 August , 2008 Hi, I hope someone will be able to help me regarding the history of the 282nd Brigade, 'D' battery, Royal Field Artillery. My Great Grandfather was part of this unit when he died, but I have found information saying that 282/D was only formed around May 1916, in time for the Somme offensive (Battle of Gommecourt). It was originally B/167th Battery, which I think was a War Raised Unit, but I have also found more information on the Internet to say that this battery was broken up between Feb-Sept 1916 and divided between A & C of that battery (no mention of 282/D). There are no records of my great Grandfather at the National Archives apart from his medal cards (he has two and on one of the cards, he has 2 regiment numbers). I paid for his records to be researched but they must have been destroyed in the 2nd World War, so I feel as though I am now banging my head against a brick wall! From what I know, my Great Grandfather did volunteer to join up, but as there are no living relatives to remember any details, I am completely confused as to what & when he would have joined and how he ended up in the brigade he was in when he died. Any help would be very much appreciated. Cheers, Lloydy

bmac Posted 7 August , 2008 Share Posted 7 August , 2008 B/167th (Howitzer) battery joined the 282nd (1/3rd London) Brigade, RFA on 28th May 1916 and was designated D Battery. It was part of the 56th (1st London) Division. It was equipped with six 4.5 in field howitzers.
