Killed in Action 16th June 1915, Bellewaarde, Ypres. He was greatly missed by his family. His mother, Ellen, Elizabeth, wept at night for her lost son. Stemp, John Henry (1900-1991) - Officer cadet trainee, RFC, from 13 April 1918, caught influenza in October and came round a few weeks later to find they'd signed the Armistice - don't have any record details, this is just what he told me. My paternal grandfather. Thorpe, Clive H. 270505, Company Quartermaster Serjeant, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). Died aged 32, 08/11/1918. Buried in grave IV. A. 1, Tournai Communal Cemetery Allied Extension (husband's great-uncle). Morland, Henry - husband's maternal grandfather. He was wounded whilst manning a gun that was blown out on HMAS Sydney in its battle with the SMS Emden. He dragged survivors of his gun to a place of safety, collected the ammunition rolling on the deck and fed it to the crew on the gun that remained in action. Tinhat47 Posted 8 January , 2012 Share Posted 8 January , 2012 I just discovered another relative this past week who served in the war, Bernard Henry Schattler Jr. "Ben" served from April 1917 to December 1918 as a fireman 3rd class (equivalent of an RN stoker) in the U.S. Navy. He served in Company B, 131st Engineers in France from July 1918 to July 1919. My great-great-grandmother's brother, John Murdcock McAuley, who served overseas in the U.S. Navy.
