My Great Uncle

Lance Corporal, Austin Frank Broughton, 1st Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers.

Killed in Action 16th June 1915, Bellewaarde, Ypres.

He was greatly missed by his family. His mother, Ellen, Elizabeth, wept at night for her lost son.

Marsh, Richard William, RN, J6031 (1890-1952) PO, torpedo gunner's mate HMS AGAMEMNON Dardanelles and Caspian Sea 1915-1922

Married 1923 Rose May Smith who spent the war filling shells at Woolwich Arsenal - my maternal grandparents.

Stemp, John Henry (1900-1991) - Officer cadet trainee, RFC, from 13 April 1918, caught influenza in October and came round a few weeks later to find they'd signed the Armistice - don't have any record details, this is just what he told me. My paternal grandfather.

Thorpe, Clive H. 270505, Company Quartermaster Serjeant, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). Died aged 32, 08/11/1918. Buried in grave IV. A. 1, Tournai Communal Cemetery Allied Extension (husband's great-uncle).

Morland, Henry - husband's maternal grandfather. I know nothing more except that we have his medal trio hanging on the landing.

Private, 23398 William JAMES, Grenadier Guards, Mar 1915 - Sept 1918, wounded. (Gt Grandfathers brother)

Lance Corporal, P/136, Samuel George ETCHES, Military Foot Police, served in France 1915. (Gt Grandmothers brother)

Lance Corporal, P1789 , Thomas Richard ETCHES, Military Mounted Police, served in Egypt (Gt Grandmothers brother)

Serjeant, 6236, Thomas WHELAN, 1st Bn Queens Own Cameron Highlanders, died 22/10/1914, remembered at Ypres Memorial (other Gt Grandmothers brother)

Private, 16701, Daniel CLARK, 8th Battalion, AIF, July 1918 to Nov 1918. Dicharged due to cessastion of hostilities. (Grandmothers cousin)

Sapper, 10592, Charles Reginald CARRUCAN, Divisional Signal Company 3 and 39th Battalion, AIF, Feb 1916 - May 1919, gassed, survived. (Grandfathers brother)

Sergeant, 1240, Edward George SEARLE, MM, 15th Battalion, AIF, Sep 1914 - Nov 1918. returned to Australia. (Grandmothers cousin)

Private, 391, Frank Vivian SEARLE, 12th Battalion, AIF, died of wounds 30 Aug 1915, age 23, buried Beach Cemetery, Gallipoli. (Grandmothers cousin)

Private, 334/2954, Raymond Vernon SEARLE, 52nd Battallion AIF, killed in action 23 Aug 1917, aged 22, buried Bethleem Farm West Cemetery. (Grandmothers cousin)

Private, 3746, George William APPELDORFF, 3rd Light Horse Regiment, Oct 1917 - May 1919. returned to Australia. (Grandmothers cousin)

My grandfather: 134261 L/Cpl James Peak Loyal North Lancashire Regt. Died at Arras 21 Sepember 1914. Buried at Humbercamps cemetery, near Arras.

Austin and Frank must have been popular names. My grandfather Frank Austin (Collins) served in the AIF...

Just an interesting quick entry: Great Uncle. AB Seaman Joseph Kinniburgh DSM. He was wounded whilst manning a gun that was blown out on HMAS Sydney in its battle with the SMS Emden. He dragged survivors of his gun to a place of safety, collected the ammunition rolling on the deck and fed it to the crew on the gun that remained in action.

Private John McCartney, 015387, RAOC, served in Egypt 1916-1919 (do not know his Regiment but would be grateful to find out if anyone might know)

My Brother in Law's Uncles:

Sapper James Greer, 59804, Postal Section Royal Engineers, killed in action 23 August 1915

Rifleman William (Wallace) Greer, 12847, 8th Batt. R.I.R. killed in action 2 July 1916

Grandfather (Avatar Picture)

Roy Dingham Jermyn – 4th Canadian Train Division

Wounded, August 8th, 1917 @ Lievin but returned to duty

Served until September 1919 when he was discharged (with a bonus of $40) upon returning to Canada

Garnet Wallace Jermyn - 47th Canadian Battalion

Killed September 3, 1918 “When his Company going into the lines through the sunken road leading to Vis-en-Artois he was instantly killed by the explosion of a high explosive shell”

His name appears on the Vimy Memorial.

14206 12th Battalion ("Bristol's Own") Gloucestershire Regiment September 1914-October 1918

34294 1st Battalion Devonshire Regiment October 1918-February 1919

Died 1970 aged 78. Survived the Somme and 3rd Ypres. Considered himself lucky.

Paternal Grandfather: Lance Corporal Ambrose Hutchings DCM

2138 Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry January 1913-December 1916

345083 16th Battalion Devonshire Regiment December 1916-March 1919

Died 1948 aged 53, from complications arising from gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen received in Palestine, December 1917.

Great Uncle: Regimental Sergeant Major Ernest Phillips DCM

2047 23rd, 26th, and 43rd Field Companies, 180th Mining Company Royal Engineers August 1898-December 1919

Died 1960s aged about 85. An Old Contemptible and Boer War veteran of Laing's Nek, Defence of Ladysmith, Belfast and Orange Free State.

Finlayson; Robert W. # S/42119 Private 1st Bat. Gordon Highlanders - joined November 1917 -Killed August 29th 1918 -Buried Ligny sur Canche Pas de Calais

I just discovered another relative this past week who served in the war, Bernard Henry Schattler Jr. "Ben" served from April 1917 to December 1918 as a fireman 3rd class (equivalent of an RN stoker) in the U.S. Navy. I wish I knew what ship he served aboard. Bernard's mother, Mary, was my great-great-grandmother's sister.

Here's a few more -- my great-grandmother's cousin Guiseppe Violano. He served in Company B, 131st Engineers in France from July 1918 to July 1919.
