Great, great uncle Private Albert Dale (6066) 2nd/6th Royal Warwickshire. KIA 19th July 1916.

Great, great uncle Guardsman George Dale (274) Coldstream Guards. Captured, but escaped and survived.

My Great Uncle, Sgt David Ireland Meikle, fought at the Somme before being killed near Ypres 12 months later. His detail is in my signature.

Great Uncle Patrick Hussey,Pte, 8th Devonshire Regt. KIA/Missing 26/10/1917, age 20.

Residents of Deptford and Rotherhithe respectively.

Grandfather Private Michael J. Boland #1148 1st R Nfld R :POW 04-1917 to 12-1918. Survived and lived until his early 70's.

Great Uncle Lance Corporal James F. Boland #765 2/1st R Nfld R :Died in '23 from TB Contracted during the war.

3rd Cousin Private Patrick J. Boland #1601 2/1st R Nfld R :Drowned in Scotland on furlough in 1916.

I would like to add my Grandfather, Andrew Charles McIver to this list. He served with the 2nd and 3rd Battalions of the Durham light Infantry, reg no 11555 1913-1917, Labour corp ( unit 798 ) in 1917 no 400700, West Yorks Regiment reg no 80358 1917-1919.

Rank: Lance Corporal & then Corporal. Killed at the Battle of the Somme on 01/07/1916 age 26

My Grandfather Private 10367 (Latterly Serjeant 241059) Ernest Leach. 2/6th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers. (born June 26th 1896 at Whitworth, near Rochdale)

Also served in WW2 as a RSM in East Lancashire Regiment.

Died November 1982 aged 86.

Great Uncle John Hanson Private RAMC was serving in India during Great War.

  • 10174 Pte. Donald Dallas, B Company, 1st Seaforth Highlanders, 7th Meerut Division, 19th Indian Brigade. Wounded at Neuve Chapelle, February or March 1915. Killed in action, 9th May 1915, Aubers Ridge. (brother of my G Grandfather, mother's side)
  • 3009 Pte. John Dallas, 1/5th Seaforth Highlanders (brother of Donald Dallas). (brother of my G Grandfather, mother's side)
  • S/2332 Pte. David Henderson Grant, Seaforth Highlanders. Killed in action 11th April 1917, Passchendale. (Nephew of Donald and John Dallas).
  • 5313DA Deckhand William MacKay, RNR, HM Patrol Boat Clach-Na-Cudin. Killed in action 25th April 1916, Adriatic Sea. (married to Margaret S. Miller, sister of Helen Miller who was married to George Bartlett mentioned below, my G Grandmother and G Grandfather on my mother's side)
  • George Davidson Bartlett (born Miller), 152nd Division, Canadian Forces. Killed in action 28th April 1917. (nephew of George, McKenzie, David, James and William).
  • Nigel Roberton Miller, 19th Battalion, 4th Canadian Brigade. Killed in action 6th April 1916 (brother of George, Marcus and Angus(9)). (married to Teenie Miller, sister of above mentioned Helen Miller)
  • George Smith Miller, 19th Battalion, 4th Canadian Brigade. Killed in action (brother of Nigel, Marcus and Angus(9)).
  • Marcus McIvor Miller, 210th Battalion, Canadian Forces. Died from meningitis at Camp Hughes, Canada (brother of Nigel, George and Angus(9)).
  • Angus Miller, 19th Battalion, 4th Canadian Brigade. Wounded 1st July 1916, Ypres (brother of Nigel, George and Marcus).

  • Sapper William Bartlett (wounded).
  • S/1959 Pte. William Bremner, Seaforth Highlanders. Discharged after 27 days as he was underage when he enlisted. Reenlisted at a later date. Wounded. (1/2 brother of Christina C. Bremner, my grandmother on my father's side)
The details above are incomplete as I am still researching the individuals. This the most full set of information that I have to date. Those individuals for which I have sparse information have been found whilst researching old issues of a local newspaper, but I have yet to find the military records for them to confirm the exact details.

Posted to D Company 29th Battalion

Disembarked Suez 07 December 1915 ex "Ascanius"

Admitted Hospital 27 January 1916 9th Field Ambulance at Serapeum (Influenza then Bronchial Pneumonia)

Posted to 8th Training Battalion at Zeitoun 30 March 1916

Posted to 54th Battery / 14th Field Artillery Brigade (sub-section D) on 01 April 1916

Sent to join BEF at Alexandria, Egypt 20 June 1916 aboard "Huntsend ???"

Disembarked Marseilles, France 30 June 1916

Died when shell struck Gun Emplacement in "Death Valley, Ginchy" around 11am on 23 January 1917

Also killed was Sergeant George Olaf Dunner from Warnambool, Victoria

I just discovered that a relative of mine served in the war -- the first with recorded details of service. He was my great-great-great-great uncle (my great-great-great grandmother's younger brother whose parents were born in Ireland)

PRIVATE FIRST CLASS McAuley, Elmer A.

Company F, 313th Infantry Regiment, 79th Division, AEF

Born April 22, 1884 in Philadelphia, Pa.

Killed in action Oct. 12, 1918 by shellfire in captured German trenches near Fresnes-Champlon-Tresauvaux area of the Troyes sector

Hi

I would like to add my great-uncle to the list.

His name was Kenneth Silmeen but he was also known as Kenneth Moffit (stepfather's name)

He was a merchant seaman who was captured by the Germans and eventually released by the Navy when they took the German prison ship The Altmark.He survived the war and died in 1973.

Pte David Johnstone - 1/9th Battn Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders - Died of Wounds - 10/4/1915 - as above

Pte Robert Johnstone - Gordon Highlanders/London regiment - Survived

Pte David Dick Johnstone - Canadian Field Artillery - Died 11/06/1916 (Canadian cousin to above)

Lce Cpl John Ashcroft - 1st Battn HLI - KIA 19/12/1914 - Defense of Givenchy

Sgt William Ashcroft - RAF/RFC - survived (dont think he saw action)

Thats it so far but still digging
