I would like to add my paternal grandfather:

Lance Corporal JOHN SILMEEN ,West Yorkshire Regiment who died aged 29 on 05 March 1917 and remembered on the Thiepval Memorial ,and his brother,my great-uncle:

Lance Corporal WILLIAM McGRAHAM SILMEEN ,Northumberland Fusiliers,who died aged 24 on 05 June 1917 and remembered on the Arras Memorial

Also their Scottish cousins who spelt their surname differently:

Private DONALD EWEN SALMENE,Cameron Highlanders,who died on 24 October 1914 and remembered at Perth Cemetery and

Private CHARLES SALMEAN,Cameron Highlanders ,who died on 22 December 1914 aged 23, and remembered on the Le Touret Memorial.

record of service known for RB & 2/7 no information on 13th

Great Grandfather

Alfred Conley 139683 driver in RFA survived no details known.

I have a Cecil Stanley Eldridge , died Sept 1918 who would appear to be a cousin of your Harry and Charles Tarmer. Cecil's mother was their aunt Charlotte Tarmer.

Another family member to add if I may:

My (maternal) g gran's brother Percy Walford Gosling, who I've found served in the original BEF as a Sapper with 11th Field Company Royal Engineers, entering France on 17th August 1914. He survived the war and went on to live in Malta.

My father served from August 1914 to October 1915 when he was discharged due to wounds during the battle of Loos . He was awarded Victory ,British and 14 Star.

William James Barnett 7039 1st Battallion Royal Berkshire Regiment. His M.I.C. shows him in Royal Engineers with number 163123 but can find absolutely nothing about this.Any Ideas ??

Have you definately got the right mic to your dad & not another Barnett?

It took me a while to get the right Ross one for my family but your name is a lot less common with the 2 t's.

Could the RE no. be for after the war ,or even WW2? Did he continue in the reserves? I'm not clued up on no.s,you need ask one of the number experts but,I recall hearing that no.s were changed at the latter stage of the war but,me only,would think a 6 figure no. was post WW1.

My tuppence worth of trifle :D

My great grandfather - 7878 Private Robert May, 1st Batallion East Yorkshire Regiment.

Killed 1 July 1916, somme.

Buried at Gordon Dump Cemetery.

Charles Davis 3-5642 Dorset Regiment. 1909-1916 1916-1919. Wounded Mesopotamia Discharged Unfit for further service 1919.

Arthur L Tremlett. Wilts Regiment. 31898, Hants Regiment. 41178, Wilts Regiment. 01653. ,No idea why he has 3 off/numbers but all 3 listed on his card ?

please note that in post 421 my relatives surname is spelt incorrectly! it is D'Hooghe not D'Hooge (see post 383)

William Simpson- my Grandfather

The McIntosh brothers, Peter who died at "Plugstreet" and buried at Rifle House Cemetery and James at High Wood and remembered at Thiepval Memorial

Charles Flanders - my wife's Great-Grandfather , gassed on the Somme and died at Army hospital at Rouen- buried at St. Severs Extension Cemetery

Also on her side the Hill brothers who were all wounded, but survived

rememberring all of them
