List of men billeted in a convent in Folkestone c. March 1915

Hello All

Some of you may be interested in the attached list of 39 men who were billeted at a convent in Folkestone, and which recently came to light in the local history centre. We are not certain which convent as there were 2 or 3 at the time.

The list is not dated. However, it is immediately recognisable as 23rd Division as almost all of the infantry battalions in that division are represented. This dates the list to about March 1915 as the division marched from Hampshire to Shorncliffe at the very end of February. The battalions represented are:

8th York & Lancaster

9th York & Lancaster

8th KOYLI

10th Northumberland Fusiliers

11th Northumberland Fusiliers

12th DLI

13th DLI

8th Yorkshire (Green Howards)

9th Yorkshire (Green Howards)

10th Duke of Wellington (West Riding)

11th West Yorkshire

11th Sherwoood Foresters

I am posting this on the off chance that someone might be researching one of these men. I hope that some of the unit researchers will find it useful too.

I will try and post some images of the list in due course.

Of the NF casualties none appear in casualty returns apart from Pte B.Wood and todate this is whats known about them;-

19678 Pte John Adamson, 10th NF - was eventually transferred to the Class 'Z' Reserve.

14175 Pte John Thompson, 10th NF - was eventually transferred to the Class 'Z' Reserve. Possible duplicate number as it appears as 10/14175 in the MR.

10832 Pte L. Paton, 11th Bn - should be 10832 Pte John Paton of Choppington who was awarded the MM 21/10/1918. Eventually transferred to the Class 'Z' Reserve.

18034 Pte Albert Roper - went onto serve with the I Pltn/'W' Coy, 1st Bn,NF and was MIA 28/3/1918. Possibly a POW?

The three West Yorkshire chaps all came through the War and went into Class Z Res. All entered France on the 26/08/1915 with the 11th Battalion, the only service Record i can find is for Pte Fred Goodchild 14539 [ Charles you have his number as 14530 ].

Fred enlisted into the 11th Battalion on the 5/9/14, at Birmingham Aged 21, serving through out the war with the 11th Battalion, suffering only one wound when a shell exploded near him [ 20/9/17 ] breaking four of his teeth that had to be extracted, he was discharged to Class Z on the 9/3/1919 after serving in France,Belgium and Italy.

Regards Kevin

PS after looking into this chap found alittle gem of info for our Good Friend mruk
