cbarber Posted 27 July , 2008 Share Posted 27 July , 2008 Hi Have reposted this as it has slipped way down the board - don't know how you get things to re-appear at the top of board COOMBS - or may have been put as COOMBES (but coombs is the family name) Charles Alfred - but again could have been enlisted under Alfred Was with the Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment Born 1879c married: Lilian or Lily (not sure if this was before enlistment or after) If you could advise his regiment id or enlistment number (not sure or right terminology) and where I can go to obtain this information. Many thanks for your offer of assistance. Carol
nhclark Posted 28 July , 2008 Share Posted 28 July , 2008 I did a Google on this man. Someone else is searching for him as well. According to the other researcher (and I stress "according to"): - he was born 18th April 1879 In Brixton. He maried Lilian Kevern on 6th October 1900. - he served with the Queens in the Anglo-Boer War. - he emigrated to Canada in c. 1904. - he served in WW1 with the Canadian CEF 54th Battalion based in Vernon B.C. - he appears to have fathered illegitimate twin children in the UK before returning to Canada. For some reason the Canadian Soldiers of the First World War website has been down for a few days (or it has moved) so I have been unable to verify his WW1 service with the CEF. If indeed he served with the Queens in the Boer War and was discharged around 1900-1904 you ought to be able to find his discharge papers at The National Archives in London in the WO 97/... series files (the files go up to 1913). If you can't get to TNA yourself it will be necessary to use an agent or SKS from the Forum. The hits I made with Google are a few years old, but it may well be worth trying to contact the other searcher. Noel

nhclark Posted 28 July , 2008 Share Posted 28 July , 2008 Noel Thank you so much for that - will see what I can track and also who the other researcher was. Carol, I stress that I simply gave you a precis of the information that I found by Googling. I can't verify that any of it is correct. The web-site for Canadian soldiers in WW1 is back up and running, and you can find Alfred's Attestation Paper here: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databas...cs8s6sav2vdgbi7 It appears as though he served for nearly 6 years with the Queens, and received 3 clasps to his SA medals. His records at TNA should make interesting reading. I have failed so far to find him in the England 1901 census - perhaps overseas?. His attestation paper gives the place of residence of his NOK, wife Lily, as Kaslo, British Columbia. I've looked at the 1911 Canadian census (http://automatedgenealogy.com/) but cannot find her there. Perhaps the family moved around a bit - he seems to have been something of a character. The only other thing that I forgot to mention is that Lily Kevern was allegedly born in 1879 in Bristol. There is a matching birth on FreeBMD. Good luck with your searching.
