Census check please

Can someone please check this lad’s family on the 1901 census for me?

He is William Rose, the son of Police Constable Thomas Rose and Mary Anne Rose.

Willie is recorded as born at Lightcliffe, Yorkshire, in Soldiers Died, but his father seems to have served in various places before settling in the Holmfirth / New Mill area of Yorkshire.

I have always thought that Willie had two brothers, one called John Alexander, who was wounded and taken prisoner, and one other - whose name I did not know. But I have now seen a photograph of Willie and his father with two brothers named Robert and Thomas - all in uniform - but no mention of John.

So what I need to know now is how many are in this family and their names so I can check what I think I know about the family is correct. I believe Constable Rose was originally from Stourminster in Dorset but had been in Yorkshire for many years before the war, first at Halifax and then at Holmfirth.

Thanks,

Tony.

Thank you Mel.

3 brothers there alright, I wonder where Willie has got to? He was mobilised with the local territorials in August 1914, but was almost certainly a little under the correct age for overseas service when he was killed in 1915.

Thanks again,

Tony.

It looks as if he was staying with his grandparents at the time of the census.

Was Donnelly the maiden name of Mary Anne? Otherwise it looks as if you could have a glitch with Lavinia but probably some pi$$ed enumerator.

Do you think that I was right about the lack of sobriety on the part of the enumerator?

Can't tell any more about Willie, but I can about his father's police service. Joined West Riding Constabulary 17 July 1893 and posted to Brighouse. Moved to Bailiff Bridge 1895, Hepworth, Huddersfield Division 1902 and Scholes 1912 where he remained until retirement in 1919. He died 27 November 1944 at Loscoe, Derbyshire, aged 76.

Thank you Colin, I have only just noticed your post. I know the family were living at Scholes during the war. The people who live in that house now found a little memorial to Willie Rose carved in a stone under the window during renovations. They built it into the side of the fireplace to preserve it.

Thanks again,

Tony.
