nhclark Posted 25 July , 2008 Share Posted 25 July , 2008 John, 1917 Toronto Directory shows Henry Papernick residing at 1/7 Duchess Street, Toronto. 1913 shows more detail. Henry Papernick, elevator operator for F.W. Woolworth & Co., 1/7 Duchess Street. In 1908 the occupant of 7 Duchess Street, house, was Edward Papernick, a teamster. Not surprisingly, there were only a few entries in each directory for this surname. I've scanned the Ontario deaths up to 1947. There are a number of entries for the surname. It seems to have been of Austrian origin. One is for a Joseph Papernick, born 1905, died 1919, parents Edward Papernick and Rosie Debova. Possible parents of Henry? Don't want to tell you how to suck eggs, but the archives of the Toronto Star are on line for a small fee, and I had good success with searching an unusual surname for mentions such as obituaries and so on. Hope the above turns out to be of some small use. It does appear to be the family of Henry, although the relationships may not be quite right. If you want to PM me with a list of names for which you have evidence of Toronto residence, I can look for them in the directories that I have. The more unusual the name, the better! nhclark Posted 25 July , 2008 Share Posted 25 July , 2008 John, I've just noted that Edward is also at 7 Duchess Street in 1913 and 1917, so this does appear to have been Henry's family. Finally I consulted the 1922 directory. Shows a Lewis Papernick living at 7 Duchess Street. Also there is Rose Papernick, described as "widow of Edward." Incidentally, I may have learned something about these directories. I said that Henry was living at "1/7" Duchess Street. This is actually written "1 7 Duchess Street", but may be "l Duchess Street" (i.e. "lives Duchess Street"). It's a matter of whether the printing is a "1" (the number "one"), or "l" (the letter "ell"). Not matter really. We have located the right family. Time for lunch now. I've earned it. John Gilinsky Posted 25 July , 2008 Author Share Posted 25 July , 2008 Yes you sure have with your persistence! I am hoping for some details as to how and why he ended up in the US Military though. Thanks again for your information, John
nhclark Posted 25 July , 2008 Share Posted 25 July , 2008 Can't help directly there John. I did a brief check of the 1911 census at http://automatedgenealogy.com/ but could not find reference to the family. I also looked at the 1910 US census and drew a blank. 'Fraid I don't have a subsrsciption to the US version of Ancestry (www.ancestry.com) so I cannot look at the details there. However, a search does reveal quite a few records to the surname. It might be a matter of buying a few units on a pay-to-view basis to see what you can find. Noel
