I have been trying to find information on my geart grandfather who served as a sgt major in the TA. In 1914 he wa stationed at the Heugh Battery in Hartlepool which was engaged by german battlecrusiers. he was on duty during the attack but i can find no records of him or the unit at the battery. the battery itself holds no records and was wondering if any are online.

Two coast-defence batteries protectied Hartlepool on 15 December 1915: the Heugh Battery (two 6" guns) and the Lighthouse Battery (one 6" gun), all manned by the Durham RGA (TF) and commanded by Lt-Col. L. Robson, RGA (T.F.).

I've got a leaflet around the house somewhere about this site.

I'm sure it's manned by volunteers in WW1 period uniform & kit on Saturdays, I'll track it down to see what history it lists.

I'm a bit embarrassed to say that although fairly near to me I've never visited.

Hi

here are a couple of scans of the Durham Garrison Artillery the first in very poor condition are themen who manned the gus in December 1914.

Arrowed in red is Bombadier Wilson Tunstall he went out to France as a Sergeant and was eventually commissioned and served on the Italian Front.

Arrowed in yellow is the man I believe to be the BSM although his badge of rank is unclear he is the only one with a crown above his stripes.

The second one is the men later in 1915 stationed at Redcar racecourse, Wilson Tunstall is now a sergeant.

hope these are of help.

regards

John

Brilliant John. See you've come up trumps again with one of the cards from your collection, just a pity the bottom corner is knacked, but there again as rare as hens teeth that pose of the Durham RGA lads who manned te batteries. Think there's also another photo of them in Litchfields book "The Volunteer Artillery" and possibly a book called "Hartlepool at War", if thats the right title.
