Medal Roll Query Numero 2!

I also came across an interesting entry on a medal index card/roll today.

Pte Harold Hickman of the South Notts Hussars has his 1914/15 Star recorded on the Intelligence Corps roll, which is a sub-section of the 10th Bn Royal Fusiliers.

His BWM/Victory medal roll states that he served with:

South Notts Hussars (1715)

M.G.D.C. (100176)

HQ 1st Army Intell Cps (GS/128878)

Cav.Cps.Reinf.Cp (GS/128878)

Can someone please tell me what the M.G.D.C. is?

As he has a different number, I would assume it is a stand alone unit but what?

Many thanks - Ian

Ian,

is 100176 a 'standard' MGC number with MGDC being an establishment of some sort - Machine Gun D....... Centre??

I haven't looked at the 128xxx clump of '10th RF' yet, so can't offer any other great thoughts.

JB/Steve,

I considered the MGC Cav option but he served with this mystery unit before the MGC existed. In addition his 14/15 Star was issued on the Intelligence Corps roll.

The only thought that comes to mind is that as he served in Egypt, he was some kind of horseback Recon Unit??

I'm sure you know that 'British Regts' lists following for 1/1 S Notts Hussars

24 Apr 15 - arrived Alexandria

18 Aug 15 - landed Suvla

Dec 15 - to Egypt

Jan 16 - 2nd Mounted Div broken up

Feb 16 - to Salonika with what became 7 Mtd Bde

Jun 17 - to Egypt - 7 Bde attached Desert Mounted Corps

Apr 18 - with Warks Yeo formed B Bn MGC

Do you have a date for when he became Int Corps ?

JB - No. This is an odd one.

I am happy to give you copies of all the info over coffee.

Ian

OK mate. I'll even pay.

- although it might not be for a couple of weeks. Real life is being a bit intrusive at the moment.
