foggy19 Posted 21 July , 2008 Share Posted 21 July , 2008 One of the units my Great Grandfather was attached to during WW1 was 966 A.E.Co. Labour Corp. Does anyone know what this abbreviation stands for? I can only think of Army education corps, or employment maybe? Thanks.
Ron Clifton Posted 21 July , 2008 Share Posted 21 July , 2008 Hello Area Employment Companies. They were usually assigned to Corps, and served semi-permanently with towns within the Corps area, doing basic "housekeeping" duties. The composition was the same as a Divisional Employment Company: 2 officers, 273 other ranks. Ron
Ivor Lee Posted 22 July , 2008 Share Posted 22 July , 2008 Ron is not completely correct about Area Employment Companies as they were used for a wider range of duties than basic housekeeping, there are records of some being used, for example, on road repairs and as escorts for PoWs. 966 is a good example as it was a Garrison Guard Company. This means the men in it were armed and used to guard store depots, railway lines and in anti aircraft defence. The bad news is there is no specific location(s) for 966 other than it was on the Lines of Comunication. Ivor
