sjustice Posted 19 July , 2008 Share Posted 19 July , 2008 Hello All, Farndale - OOB for the Western Front at the armistice... He lists 49th Brigade RGA as part of Fifth Army Troops and identifies it as an 8" Howitzer battery. Unfortunately he doesn't list the requisite 8" Howitzer unit, just the 6" Howitzer batteries (99, 166, 346). Did something catastrophic befall this battery at the end of the war or has Farndale just missed it? Kind Regards, SMJ
Ron Clifton Posted 19 July , 2008 Share Posted 19 July , 2008 Hello Simon No, it's not a mistake: the earlier OOBs in class WO95 at Kew show 49 Bde RGA as having only three 6-inch howitzer batteries throughout 1918. Either it lost its 8-inch before ceasing to be a Heavy Artillery Group, or it was meant to have one but never got one (a lot of batteries were disbanded to make others up from four guns to six). WO95/5494 which gives the allocations of batteries and brigades RGA may be able to throw more light on the real reason. Ron
sjustice Posted 19 July , 2008 Author Share Posted 19 July , 2008 Great. Thanks Ron. It's an interesting quirk, then and all the more fun for it. Kind Regards, SMJ
