Hello to all,

Please can anyone help with the 11th Battalion 'The Queens Surrey Regiment'.

In particular the 'Transport Section'.

Where did they serve?

Thanks in anticipation.

Phil Scott

Hello Phil

Welcome to the forum

Top-left of this page under the logo you can see a link to The Long, Long Trail. This kind of factual info is covered in considerable depth there. Here are some short-cuts, but do have a rummage around.

The page on the Queen's is here. You will see that 11th Bn belonged to 41st Division, and a page on that formation and its movements is here. A description of an infantry battalion, including its transport, is here.

Good luck.

Many thanks Chris,

I wonder how a born and bred Norfolk man (my Grandfather) came to be serving in London based regiment ?

Thanks once again,

Phil.

Once conscription was introduced in early 1916, the logical linkage between where a man came from and the unit with which he served was utterly broken. Even before then, there were many reasons why a man would have served with a non-local unit. The influence of the recruiting officers and NCOs, the attraction of a famous regiment, etc.
