cottager Posted 9 July , 2008 Share Posted 9 July , 2008 Hi everyone I'm new around here, and there's something in particular I'd appreciate help with which I'm still putting together; but for now I just have a general question about interpreting entries in the London Gazette. Taking one at random, typical of thousands of others: James Harrison to be Lieutenant, vice Thwaytes, resigned. 1. What does 'vice' indicate or mean? 2. Thwaytes is presumably the one who has resigned/stepped down? Many thanks
ralphjd Posted 9 July , 2008 Share Posted 9 July , 2008 1)Vice in this context means in place of. Ralph. 2) yes.
