Pals

Does anybody have the Battalion War Diary for the 17th Royal Fusiliers covering the two dates 24 March 1918 and 23 April 1918. Am interested in where the Battalion was and what casualties it suffered on those dates.

Many thanks in advance.

Regards

Steve

Battalion History (Everard Wyrall).

24th March - east and north east of Haplincourt (C & D Coys in front, A & B in support)

8.40 commenced retirement to Haplincourt - Bertincourt Road, but german attack commenced 0900. Ended day at west of Ligny Thilloy

Not sure of casualies, but they mustered 26 o.r. (A Coy), 26 o.r. (B Coy) 1 officer, 18 o.r. © and 2 and 11 (D).

23rd April - seem to have been in the Line in the area opposite Boyelles. Quiet except for german shelling. No record of casualties.

Hope this helps. I can scan if required.

Thanks for that Steve, it does indeed help.

I had a casualty recorded on his MIC as 23/04/1918 and on the Roll itself as 24/03/1918. Wanted to confirm which date was the more likely, from what you've supplied I'll go with 24/03/1918.

Thanks again.

Thanks Andy

Don't suppose you happen to know how many casualties they suffered that day? I'm trying to determine whether two casualties I've found are possible non-commemorations.

Not sure if you have resolved this problem but looking at Soldiers Died in the Great War the 17 RF lost 1 Officer & 35 ORs on the 24th March.

I have photos of the War Diary for March and April 1918, but it is too big, even to send one page by attachment. March contains sketch maps and a report of 24th to 31st March. If needed tell me how i can send them to you

Thanks for the offer, I don't actually need the War Diary itself but could I ask you how the 17/RF War Diary compares with SDGW as far as casualties on 24th March are concerned?
