At Home Dad Posted 16 June , 2008 Posted 16 June , 2008 Hallo all, I wonder if any of you can shed some light on to this document for me, ie how to read the information. am I correct in thinking that he applied to enlist on the 12/12/15 (also his birthday) and he was in some sort of reserve. Was this 'full time', ie barracks and boot polish? Well, re-reading that, I think you can get a grip on just how little I can get from this document! Was he originally Essex regiment, then Labour Corps, or how does it work? What is the Essex Regiment connection? The discharge element is quite clear, however, and is currently being discussed on this thread: http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/i...howtopic=100217 A surprise to me! Many thanks for any help Kind regards
ralphjd Posted 16 June , 2008 Posted 16 June , 2008 I would say that he originally enlisted for the D of W (Duration of War) on the 12 Dec 1915 and then placed on the reserve list the day after. Posted to the 14th Essex Regt 11-3-1916 upon rejoining (called up from the reserve) then to Number 2 Works Company Labour Corps 328th (Home Service Company) on the 5th May 1917, finally being discharged on the 10th August 1917 as physically unfit. Stand to be corrected.Ralph.
At Home Dad Posted 16 June , 2008 Author Posted 16 June , 2008 Thanks Ralph Does 'in reserve' mean that he would be still doing his 'day' job and living at home, or would he be in uniform and away? It's interesting that he signed up not only on his 30th birthday but also very soon after his brother in law's first 'Letters From France' would be arriving on the doormat. Would he have been placed in reserve due his deafness? That time in the 14th Essex, March 1916 - May 1917, was that a 'regular' unit doing regular Army things on the homefront in war time - Sorry, I'm rambling, I shall use the fine GWF search facility! Thanks for your help, as always Kind regards, all

Stand to be corrected.Ralph. Not sure that Ralph is 100% correct. It looks to me as if there are " " marks on the line that has Number 2 Works Company on it. If I am correct it means the same day he joined the 14th Essex he was placed in one of its Works Companies. I think he was in an Essex Regiment Infantry Works Company from 11 March 1916 then on 5 May 1917 transferred to the Labour Corps and into 328 Company. 328 was a Works Company located at Northampton. Ivor
