gerb Posted 14 June , 2008 Share Posted 14 June , 2008 Dear All, Can anybody help me locate where the iconic 1918 St Quentin Canal - Victory Photograph was taken as I would like to visit the site. Not a bad idea for a thread to confirm the locations of WWW1 photographs. Regards gerb
Bob Coulson Posted 14 June , 2008 Share Posted 14 June , 2008 I believe it was at Riqueval. Bob.
nigelcave Posted 14 June , 2008 Share Posted 14 June , 2008 It is at Riqueval, on the N44 between Cambrai and St Quentin, more or less opposite the junction with the D932 to Le Cateau. There is still (I think) a handy cafe/restaurant on the D932 side of the N44 and one of the very first WFA plaques (near a bunker) marks the event. The pix is that of Brig Gen Campbell VC addressing 137 Bde, 46 (NM) Div. The bridge is still there and it is a pretty impressive site, leaving you wondering how on earth they managed the crossing. The (rather forlorn) 46th Div Memorial is about a km and a half down the road (heading south), just off on the left up a track.

Paul Reed Posted 15 June , 2008 Share Posted 15 June , 2008 The WFA memorial on the site: and nearby memorial to 46th Division which when I was there over the winter was looking like it had been renovated:

Paul Reed Posted 15 June , 2008 Share Posted 15 June , 2008 Nice shot, Wesley! I see you managed to miss the idiot standing on the bridge that day...
Wesley Posted 15 June , 2008 Share Posted 15 June , 2008 Do I know that idiot Paul? Here’s another photo of the bridge… (clickable image) This one is from roughly(ish) the same angle as the 1918 photo, as you can see nature has claimed a decisive victory!
