I'd be most grateful for help in identifying the unit 2/I.A.P, ASC, to which Pte/Dvr John Healy, of Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny, Regt'l No. MS/1813, reported to in France on 23/9/1914 (or he possibly deployed with the unit itself on that date) .

Cheers,

Niall

I think it may be the Army Service Corps.

Cheers,

Carole.

Carole, I think Niall is looking to identify 2/I.A.P,

AP = Ammunition Park, which is ASC-speak for an ammunition dump and associated transport.

Oops, sorry Niall, I got confused by the ASC in the title - hope you get the answers you need. Cheers, Carole.

If it is any consolation, Carole, I was thinking exactly the same and never gave the AP part a thought. I'm off to do my lines now.

Hello Carole

2nd Indian [Cavalry Division] Ammunition Park. If you have any indication as to the ASC company number, it should be 72.

Thanks Ron, but the 2nd Indian Division didn't arrive in France until mid Dec 1914 , and there's no evidence of any elements of the Indian Corps being in France as early as 23 Sep 1914...

This is only a suggestion, not a shadow of evidence for it. According to Corrigan, the first Indian troops disembarked at Marseilles 26/9/14. However, he says that they were chronically short of artillery. Could it be that ASC were attached to Indian divisions to make up a shortage and that your man was joining that? In effect an advance party waiting for it's division to arrive?

Hello Niall and Tom

The Div Amm Parks were not integral parts of their divisions but were L of C troops. In the case of 72 Co ASC, it was based in the UK in Aug/Sep 1914 but was chosen to go to France to serve 2nd Indian Cav Div on the latter's arrival. It was not based in India which in fact had no ASC units, the Indian Army's Supply & Transport Corps fulfilling this role in the subcontinent.

Which ties in with Corrigan and more or less what I had in mind.
