Is there a direct connection between a Gunner's service number and the unit he was sent to?

Did all Gunners with Unit numbers 2177** go to the same Unit?

Were they recruited at the same time?

If so, can any Pal tellme were and or when.

Thank you.

Does anyone know anything about R.A. Service numbers?

As an example

27716 Driver GA Gay 53 Bde 9 Div

27717 Gunner F Greaves C/71 Bde 15 Div

Totally different Divisions although I have many other examples where close numbers are in the same brigade especially the war raised units.

I have only got one 2177** on my database so far

217719 Gnr C Brand A Bty 123 Bde 37 Div from Aberdeenshire died 23/08/18

Not a complete answer I know, there was a lot of Batteries and Brigades that moved and changed and likewise no doubt did many of the Gunners.

Only six-digit Royal Artillery Territorial Force regimental numbers are attributable to units (300,001 to 388,000 for RGA; 600,001 to 624,000 for RHA; 624,001 to 975,000 for RFA). Dick Flory

My Grandfather joined the RFA in 1916 his service number was 1979** and he was with the 312th Battery Royal Field Artillery – 62nd Division. Not sure if this helps.

Looking at the 29th Divisional Artillery War Record and Honours Book there is a wide variation of numbers attributed.

Oh well thanks guys.

I will keep trying I am determined to find out where my Grandad served. I think he enlisted in either Carluke, or Glasgow.
