frogturn Posted 18 May , 2008 Share Posted 18 May , 2008 Hello to everyone. I picked up these items today for the princely sum of 50 pence. I think one of the objects are barbed wire cutters-they are marked "Bradbury 1915". Can anyone confirm? The other object is leather, well made ,unmarked ,bar for a "R" stamped on the back. I can't help thinking it looks like a reciever for a lance or similar. What do you think? Thanks,as ever,Paul.
centurion Posted 18 May , 2008 Share Posted 18 May , 2008 I think the cutters are wire cutters but electricians not barbed wire. I have a modern set that looks very similar
Chris Henschke Posted 18 May , 2008 Share Posted 18 May , 2008 The cutters are for cutting barbed wire. They appear to be Cutters, wire, Mark V, introduced in 1912. They were designed to cut No. 4 S.W.G. of mild steel or hard drawn iron wire. They weighed 1 lb. 8 ozs.11 inches long. They became obsolescent when the folding wire cutters came into service in late 1916.Chris Henschke
Chris Henschke Posted 18 May , 2008 Share Posted 18 May , 2008 The leather piece looks similar to the Bucket, signalling flags.

Hello Paul, I'm no expert but ,the leather object looks like it could be a 'lance bucket' that was attached to the stirrup harness so as to secure the but-end of a lance. (maybe?) Regared, C.T. Max Poilu Posted 18 May , 2008 Share Posted 18 May , 2008 Chris is right with the cutters - very common pattern, used to buy them all the time in France at fairs etc.
Kirkes Lamb Posted 19 May , 2008 Share Posted 19 May , 2008 Chris is right with the cutters - very common pattern, used to buy them all the time in France at fairs etc. But at 50p they are still a bargain!
Max Poilu Posted 19 May , 2008 Share Posted 19 May , 2008 Yep, and like everything else they certainly aren't common any more. Regardless, for 50p they are a fantastic find.
